Warangal Air Port revival pushed Forward By Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu

In a landmark move to strengthen regional air connectivity in Telangana, Civil Aviation Minister K Ramamohan Naidu has given green signal for the development of Mamnoor AirPort in Warangal. This step follows the one time waiver of the exclusivity clause by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), clearing the runway for the much-anticipated project.

The approval marks a crucial milestone for the state, with Minister Naidu emphasizing his commitment to accelerating infrastructure that boost economic growth and accessibility. “Warangal has immense potential to become a major regional hub. We are committed to ensuring this project moves swiftly, bringing new opportunities for trade, tourism and local employment”, added Naidu.

The Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in a letter dated November 5, 2024, reiterated the state’s support for the airport’s development under the UDAN scheme, in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The state has already initiated land acquisition, allotting Rs 205 crore for 800.30 acres, ensuring the Airport can handle Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 category aircraft.

Responding to the state government’s request for expedited action, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ramamohan Naidu secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from GMR Hyderabad Airport, confirming the waiver of the 150 kms exclusive restriction under clause 3.2 of the concession agreement. The NOC, however, solely applies to Mamnoor Airport  and will not affect future projects within the exclusivity zone.

During the Nizam’s era, air flights used to operate from Mamnoor. It served as a key service during the India-China war. Mamnoor Airport, which closed nearly 32 years ago, is about to get its ‘wings’ back.

Under Minister Naidu’s directive, the AAI has initiated infrastructure planning, with the green signal to proceed upon receiving necessary regulatory clearances. The operationalization of Warangal Airport will be a game-changer for Telangana, fostering regional development, tourism and trade opportunities.

Minister Naidu reaffirmed his dedication to advancing India’s aviation sector, stating “this airport is more than just infrastructure. It’s a gateway to growth and prosperity for Warangal and beyond”.

With the minister’s pro-active leadership and coordinated efforts of state and central authorities, Warangal Airport set to become a pivotal node in India’s regional air network, promising a brighter and more connected future for Telangana.
