Prayagraj, India – Stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela during sacred Mouni Amavasya Snan results in deadly disaster, taking minimum 15 lives and injuring over 50 others. This accident happened at Sector-2 as a sudden massive inflow of devotees caused barricades to fall off, and in the melee and panic that erupted, at least 15 persons lost their lives.
Deadly Stampede During Holy Bath
Thousands of devotees had gathered at the Sangam for a holy dip in the early hours of Wednesday at 2 AM, believing it to be an auspicious occasion for spiritual cleansing. However, the overwhelming crowd pressure led to a sudden stampede, trapping several individuals under the rush. Emergency response teams acted swiftly, providing immediate medical assistance and rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. Medical experts fear the death toll may rise.
The Akhada Parishad cancels Amrit Snan.
After the tragedy, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad had to take a very crucial decision-the Amrit Snan scheduled for that day would not take place-as a mark of respect for the dead and to avoid further mishaps. President of the Akhada Parishad Ravindra Puri decided to advance the third Amrit Snan by a week; instead of taking place during the Mouni Amavasya, it would now be there on February 3.
“Considering the unfortunate incident and the safety concerns, we have decided to postpone the Amrit Snan. We urge devotees to cooperate and avoid gathering in large numbers,” he stated.
Authorities Urge Caution, Future Plans Awaited
All Akhadas have unanimously decided to refrain from the ritual for now. Officials have urged religious groups to exercise caution and prioritize safety. The ceremonial procession with sages and Naga Sadhus has also been put on hold. Further decisions regarding future gatherings will be announced soon.
