Telangana’s local body elections have been unexpectedly stalled after the High Court issued a verdict concerning BC reservations. On Thursday, the State Election Commission (SEC) announced that the recently issued election notifications have been immediately stayed. The suspension will continue until further directives are received, bringing all ongoing preparations to a temporary halt.
The High Court had earlier provided key instructions regarding the implementation of 42% BC reservations in local body elections. The court emphasized that the election process should not proceed until the matter is legally clarified. Acting in compliance with the judgment, the SEC decided to suspend the election code enforcement and all activities related to the notifications.
This development has impacted elections across municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats in the state. The High Court’s verdict, along with the SEC’s subsequent actions, has sparked intense discussions within Telangana’s political landscape. BC associations and various political parties have expressed their views on the matter, while public attention remains focused on the SEC’s next moves.
Earlier, the Telangana Election Commission had scheduled elections in five phases, starting with MPTC and ZPTC seats, followed by sarpanch and ward member elections. The process was set to begin on November 9 and conclude on November 11. However, the High Court’s decision has effectively paused the entire election schedule until further notice.
