Supreme Court Seeks CBI’s Opinion on Further Probe In Viveka Murder Case

The Supreme Court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for clarity on whether further investigation in the Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case, a high-profile case, is still necessary or not. This was directed in a recent hearing of two main petitions—a one by Sunitha Reddy, daughter of the victim, seeking justice for her father and another by the CBI, requesting cancellation of the bail extended to YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy, one of the accused.

While hearing the case, the Supreme Court raised three significant questions before the CBI: Does the agency think a further investigation is needed? What is its opinion regarding the closure report filed by the Andhra Pradesh government in the Kadapa Sessions Court? And, can the trial going on and any possible probe in the future be conducted at the same time?

Though the court has postponed the issue, it still hasn’t announced a date for the next hearing. Interestingly, the Supreme Court had previously fixed a date for the completion of the investigation. Following that timeframe lapsed, the trial and investigation both were put on hold. In the meantime, some of the accused persons were released on bail, prompting fears that witnesses in the matter could be swayed.

With the CBI now set to file its position, everyone waits with bated breath for what happens next—whether it will urge an opening of a new phase of investigation, how it plans to proceed with the trial, and its take on the closure report. The Supreme Court’s forthcoming rulings could be critical in determining the course and fate of this politically charged and closely observed case.
