The Supreme Court has issued fresh notices to Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, seeking details on actions taken regarding the defection of MLAs. This follows an earlier directive in which the court had sought a response within a stipulated timeframe.
In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, ten MLAs, who contested and won on a BRS ticket, later joined the Congress. The BRS has challenged this defection, arguing that switching parties after being elected on a particular symbol constitutes a breach of public mandate.
The party subsequently approached the Supreme Court, requesting the disqualification of the defected legislators. During the hearing, the court issued notices to the Telangana government, the Assembly Secretary, the ten MLAs, and the Election Commission, directing them to submit their responses by March 22. The next hearing was scheduled for March 25.
However, with the Speaker failing to respond within the deadline, the Supreme Court has now reissued notices, reiterating the need for compliance.
