Story:
Siddharth (Nara Rohith) — a man in his thirties who is still unmarried. The reason isn’t a lack of opportunities but his own rigid checklist. Siddharth believes his bride must have five very specific qualities, and because of these self-imposed conditions, he rejects every proposal that comes his way.
The roots of these rules go back to his younger days and his first love, Vaishnavi (Sri Devi Vijay Kumar). Their relationship ends in heartbreak, leaving Siddharth scarred and shaping the principles he follows in life.
Just when it seems he may never find the right partner, fate brings him face-to-face with Aira (Vriti Vaghani) at an airport. To his surprise, she fits perfectly into the mold he has always dreamt of. But there’s a twist — Aira is still a student and preparing to move abroad. Siddharth takes a position as a lecturer at her college to be near her. They start to fall in love, but it will not be easy. There is an age difference and a possibly bigger problem that threatens their relationship.
The story then weaves together Siddharth’s past with Vaishnavi and his present with Aira. Questions arise — How do these two love stories connect? What challenges stand in Siddharth’s way? Will his friends’ support help him overcome the odds? And above all, will Siddharth finally find the marriage he has been waiting for? The film answers it all.
Review:
Nara Rohith returns to the silver screen after a long hiatus with Sundarakanda and you can be sure he does not disappoint this time. With respect to his previous film Bhairavam, which did not have much of an impact, Rohith shows more energy and performs naturally. His improved comic timing and unexpected dance moves give freshness to Rohith on screen and this may be one of his best performances for the last few years.
The movie also stars Vriti Vaghani as the heroine, who performs confidently in her debut with a charming performance and clean acting. The Eeswar fame Sri Devi Vijay Kumar returns to Telugu cinema to lend beauty and maturity to the film. Satya, however, takes center stage with his impeccable sense of timing for comedy, holding audiences hooked to the screen. Sunaina is a natural fit as his wife, and Vasuki Anand as the hero’s sister adds authenticity. The supporting cast featuring Naresh, Abhinav Gomatham, Ajay, Rupa Lakshmi, VTV Ganesh, and Viswant give good performances.
The three layers of the hero’s life are explored—his first love in his youth, his current relationship, and the sudden reappearance of his past love. Though the subject seems to be generic, directorial debutant Venkatesh Nimmalapudi cleverly incorporates a new twist that makes the audience sit up and notice. The movie is full of laughs and romance in the first half, culminating in a gripping interval block. The second half becomes a bit sluggish with clichéd sequences, but the emotional peak compensates, leaving a nice impression.
On the technical front, Sundarakanda fares well. Pradeesh M Varma’s cinematography lends a lively appearance to the film, while Leon James’s background score adds to the emotional intensity. The songs are merely adequate and could have been more effective. The production standards are high, and the film is visually satisfactory and glossy.
On the whole, Sundarakanda is a clean family entertainer made possible because of Nara Rohith’s rejuvenating return, Satya’s slapstick comedy, and an interesting narration surprise. In spite of small pacing problems in the second half, the movie is able to maintain a good balance between entertainment and sentiment and prove to be a nice watch for families.
