The Telangana government has appointed Shivdhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police (DGP). A 1994-batch IPS officer, Reddy is currently serving as the Chief of Intelligence in the state. He will assume charge as DGP on October 1.
He was born in Hyderabad and belongs to Thulekalan (Peddathundla) village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal, Rangareddy District. He studied from primary school through higher education in Hyderabad. Shivadhar Reddy completed his LLB from Osmania University, practiced as an advocate for some time, and then cleared the Civil Services exam to join the Indian Police Service in 1994.
As an ASP, he worked in Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli in Visakhapatnam district. He served as Greyhounds Squadron Commander and as SP in Bellampalli, Adilabad, Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts. As district SP and DIG of SIB, Shivadhar Reddy played a key role in the suppression of Maoist activities.
Between 2014 and 2016, he served as the first Intelligence Chief of Telangana state. He planned the operation in the 2016 Nayeem encounter. Shivadhar Reddy also worked as part of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo under the UN Peacekeeping forces. While serving as SP in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur, he supervised many sensational cases.
After the 2007 bomb blasts in Makkah Masjid and the police firing incident that killed 14 people, the government appointed Shivadhar Reddy as Hyderabad South Zone DCP. During that extremely tense situation, he worked day and night, instilling courage among people from all communities and effectively maintaining peace and security.
While serving as the Police Commissioner of Visakhapatnam, he organized the Arrive Alive campaign to promote road safety. He worked as Additional Director and Director of ACB in united Andhra Pradesh. Shivadhar Reddy served as IG and Additional DG in the personal wing.
He also has experience as Additional DGP of Road Safety. In 2023, after the Congress government came to power, Shivadhar Reddy was reappointed as Intelligence Chief. In August 2024, he was promoted to DGP. He has received many awards including the Gallantry Medal, Police Medal, President’s Medal, and United Nations Medal
