Ritu Varma Speaks Out on Blame Culture in Film Industry

Hyderabad: Actress Ritu Varma, who stars in the upcoming romantic thriller web series Devika & Danny, set to stream from June 6 on JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, has shared her thoughts on the pressures faced by actors when a film fails. Speaking during the series’ promotions, she said it’s unfair to blame actors alone for a project’s poor box office performance. “I don’t have deep knowledge of box office business. We all want our films to succeed and benefit producers. But when that doesn’t happen, it’s painful. Early in my career, I took it hard. Now, I’ve stopped stressing over it and instead focus on my future projects and roles,” she said.

Ritu emphasized that cinema is a collective effort and shouldn’t rest on one individual’s shoulders. “Movies are made with contributions from 24 different crafts. Holding one person accountable when a film flops isn’t right. Actors are often tagged as ‘golden leg’ or ‘iron leg’, which is unfair. People also ask why I don’t do certain types of films. The truth is, those offers have to come to me first. Filmmakers need to believe I can suit their stories. I choose the best from what’s available and I’m happy doing work I love.” She also expressed confidence that viewers will find her role in Devika & Danny very natural and relatable.
