Revanth Reddy Efforts To Bring Foreign Universities To Hyderabad

The Revanth Reddy government has started efforts to attract campuses of renowned foreign universities to Hyderabad, which has become a hub for prestigious educational institutions, pharma and IT companies. It aims to set up at least one world-renowned foreign university in Hyderabad so as to provide the best opportunities to the students here and to enhance the brand of the city.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently met with the owners of Stanford University in America and Oxford in UK and invited them to set up a campus in Hyderabad. The Chief Minister  has recently revealed that the students of the state should compete with the world and for that purpose they are trying to arrange campuses by talking to the managements of the top universities.

Every year 12 lakh people from India go to America, Australia, Canada, UK, Germany and other countries for higher education. Among them, students from Telugu states are in the largest number. In this order, the central government has allowed the establishment of campuses of foreign universities in the country in November 2023 itself.

Top 500 universities in the world ranking can apply to UGC. According to UGC sources, more than 10 universities have applied. Australia’s Daikin University has received permission from the UGC (University Grants Commission) to set up a campus in Gift City, Ahmedabad. Classes have started there in the current academic year (2024-25).

It is remarkable that 3,500 applications have been received for a PG course in the cyber security department in this campus. This university has been recognized as the first foreign university to open premises in our country.

Recently, UK’s Southampton University has received preliminary permission (LOI) from UGC to set up a campus in Gurugram. Universities in Malaysia and Canada have also applied and are waiting for approvals.

Lincoln University of Malaysia applied to the UGC a few months ago to set up a campus in Telangana. It is in the range of 301-340 in QS World Ranking. UGC has not yet approved this. An official of the higher education council opined that there is a possibility of setting up the university in the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Hyderabad has already become an education hub with IIT, Indian Business School (ISB), BITS Pilani Campus, Nalsar and Central Universities. Skill University was recently launched by the Revanth Reddy government. Apart from this, the government hopes that if world-class university campuses are established, it will help Hyderabad grow as an international city.
