Red Corner Notice Issued Against Former Police Officer Prabhakar Rao In Phone Tapping Case

The Indian government has formally obtained Red Corner Notices (RCNs) against retired senior police officer Prabhakar Rao and Shravan Rao, both prime accused in the sensational phone tapping scandal. Both are charged with conducting illegal spy activities, and hence, authorities have taken strict action.

Illegal tapping of phones was allegedly done by establishing a server at the iNews office, and Shravan Rao had a key role to play in its operation. The news has been followed by a huge political and legal tempest.

Prior to the investigation taking momentum, Prabhakar Rao departed for the U.S., claiming medical reasons, and Shravan Rao absconded. At first, Prabhakar Rao had promised law officials that he would return within a period of six months. Nevertheless, he soon secured a Green Card and opted to stay back in the U.S., fuelling doubts about his intention to avoid the probe.

With an extradition treaty between India and the U.S., the Red Corner Notice allows American authorities to arrest them, setting the stage for their possible deportation to India.

Prabhakar Rao and Shravan Rao would be expected to contest their extradition in U.S. courts, perhaps alleging political victimization in order to hinder their return. If the courts decide in their favor, deportation may be stalled. But if their role in illegal activities is found to be real and non-political, the extradition will go ahead as per legal norms.

Against this backdrop, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has come out with a strong statement, saying that if these people are brought back, top BRS leaders will be arrested within 24 hours. This statement has also added to political tensions, making the case a top flashpoint in the state’s politics.
