The controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan continues, despite the film’s successful release. Following actor Mohanlal’s public apology, director Prithviraj Sukumaran’s mother, Mallika, has addressed the issue, stating that her son has been unfairly targeted. In a social media post, she expressed disappointment over misleading reports and defended Prithviraj against allegations of wrongdoing.
“I am fully aware of what transpired behind the scenes of L2: Empuraan. Prithviraj is being unjustly blamed, and false narratives are being spread. As a mother, it pains me to see this. Neither Mohanlal nor the film’s producers have accused him of deception. I have known Mohanlal for years—he considers my son with great regard. However, certain individuals are attempting to make him a scapegoat,” she stated.
Mohanlal Issues Apology; Makers Modify Film
Mallika also questioned why Prithviraj alone was being held accountable for the controversy. “If there were concerns about the film, responsibility lies with the entire team. The script was reviewed, and all key members were present during production. Every scene was approved collectively, with the writer making necessary changes. The claim that certain scenes were added without Mohanlal’s knowledge is untrue—he had watched the film. My son has never disrespected personal beliefs, nor will he ever do so,” she asserted.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, L2: Empuraan was released on March 27 and has grossed over ₹100 crore. However, following backlash over specific scenes, the makers have reportedly modified 17 sequences in response to the controversy.
