The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ capital, Port Blair, has been officially renamed *Srivijayapuram*. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision, explaining that the previous name, Port Blair, carried colonial connotations, while Srivijayapuram symbolizes the triumph of India’s independence struggle and the pivotal role played by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Highlighting the historical significance of the region, Shah noted that the islands once served as a naval base for the Cholas and are now a strategic asset for India. He also pointed out that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolor flag in these islands. Additionally, Shah mentioned the Cellular Jail, where prominent freedom fighters, including Veer Savarkar, were incarcerated during India’s fight for independence.
