Speakers at the birth anniversary celebrations of prominent social reformer Savitribai Phule,who initiated for women education in the country, have urged the Center to present `Bharat Ratna’, highest civilian award to her in recognition of her services to the women folk of the country.
The program organized by Bharat Chaitanya Youth Party in Vijayawada on Friday, remembered her life dedicated for the women of the country, the poor and the education of girls. It was celebrated as National Women Teachers’ Day.
They called on every teacher to take her life lessons and provide better citizens for the future. BC Youth Party chief Ramachandra Yadav said that he will write a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking `Bharat Ratna’ for her.
Film actress and social worker Renu Desai, participating in the program, said that it was a blessing for her to be born in the same area where Savitribai Phule was born, and that she was very proud of it. “We grew up listening to and reading the stories of Savitribai since childhood. Her services will never be erased or scattered in the country”, she said.
“If she had not fought for the education of girls that day and had not taken a step forward, where would we be!?”, she asked.
Film actor Padma Shri Brahmanandam, who participated as the chief guest, said that if a woman is educated, she can conquer society and the country. He deplored that social evils that existed decades ago still persist here and there. If they are to go away, he said that women should be fully educated.
He recalled that Gurajada Apparao shared some valuable points in his work Kanyasulkam. He explained that every female teacher should take the life of Savitribai Phule as an ideal and excel in their profession. As part of the program, 125 female teachers from across the state were selected and presented with awards, certificates of appreciation and mementos.
