‘No One Like Me Before or After’: Ilaiyaraaja

Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja, revered as one of Indian cinema’s greatest musical talents, has made bold remarks about his legacy and unique journey in a recent interview. The maestro, known for transforming the landscape of Indian film music, emphasized that his rise was unprecedented and divinely guided.

Speaking candidly, Ilaiyaraaja said, “Those with true knowledge must speak about themselves, or else no one will know. In my case, I must say this: there has been no one like me before, and there will be none after.”

He contrasted his path with that of other composers, noting that many learned under established gurus and began their careers after years of training. “I didn’t follow that route. I was born and raised in a small village where there was no opportunity to formally learn music. I never trained under anyone. Reaching this level from such a background was only possible because of God. I consider it a divine blessing,” he said.

Ilaiyaraaja’s name has long been synonymous with cinematic music excellence. In earlier decades, his name alone on a film poster would draw audiences to theatres. His compositions have been key to the success of countless films and the popularity of several actors.

With hundreds of timeless hits to his name, Ilaiyaraaja continues to be a towering igure in Indian music, admired for both his genius and humility.
