Navya Nair Fined ₹1.14 Lakh for Carrying Jasmine Flowers into Melbourne

Actress Navya Nair was recently fined ₹1.14 lakh by Australian authorities for attempting to carry jasmine flowers in her luggage while traveling to Melbourne. The incident occurred at Melbourne Airport, where customs officers detected the flowers during routine checks. Under Australia’s strict biosecurity regulations, it is prohibited to bring in items such as fruits, seeds, and flowers, as they could potentially introduce pests or diseases to the country.

Melbourne is known for enforcing some of the toughest biosecurity laws globally, with penalties for violating these rules being significant. The primary aim of these laws is to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens and pests that could affect the country’s agricultural sector. Navya, who was unaware of the restriction on carrying flowers, was fined ₹1.14 lakh for the violation. Upon realizing the reason for the fine, she paid the amount without contest.

The actress later shared her experience during an Onam celebration in Melbourne, where she humorously remarked that the flowers she brought with her, which were valued at ₹1 lakh, ended up costing her the same amount in fines. Her light-hearted comment about the situation garnered attention on social media, sparking discussions on the stringent biosecurity policies in place at Australian airports.
