Manipur Imposes President’s Rule Amid Rising Communal Clashes

In response to escalating communal violence in Manipur, the central government has imposed President’s Rule in the state. A notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the decision, which follows the resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh. This significant development occurred within days of Singh’s resignation.

President Droupadi Murmu issued orders stating, “After reviewing the report submitted by the Governor of Manipur and other relevant information, we have concluded that the conditions do not allow for constitutional governance. In light of this, we have invoked Article 356 of the Constitution to impose President’s Rule in Manipur.”

Before the legislative assembly session, Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned from his post. Following this, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla directed the cancellation of the upcoming assembly session. In the aftermath, state BJP leaders held discussions with the party leadership to decide on the next Chief Minister. However, with no consensus emerging on a candidate, the central government chose to implement President’s Rule in the state.
