Lokesh Kanagaraj has established himself as the number one director in South India right now. After starting his career with the successful Maanagaram, he continued his rise with the success of Kaithi being his first blockbuster and he qualified for star director status. His next film, Master, did as expected at the box office but he gained star director status after the ages of success called Vikram. Although Leo didn’t live up to expectations, Lokesh’s fan following continues to remain intact and grow.
The anticipation of his next film Coolie is already building, as is the hype over his next film. Lokesh’s slate is full of promising projects, including sequels to Kaithi and Vikram, a movie called Rolex, and even a possible collaboration with Bollywood heavyweight Aamir Khan. Despite such a hectic schedule, Lokesh is venturing into acting. He just announced that he would be making his debut as a lead actor in a commercial movie.
The film will be directed by Arun Matheswaran, the mastermind behind movies such as Saani Kaayidham (featuring Keerthy Suresh) and Captain Miller (featuring Dhanush). Lokesh’s next is a gangster drama, and he has confirmed that work is already on for his character. Originally, Arun had intended a biopic on Ilaiyaraaja with Dhanush, but since it got delayed, the gangster film with Lokesh will be made first.
In preparation for the role, Lokesh has been putting in extra effort to change his body shape, losing weight, gaining muscle mass, and growing a beard. He also added that though the script for Kaithi 2 is complete, it will be eight months before they begin shooting, so he is going to finish his acting debut first and then proceed with the sequel.
Lokesh earlier made a notable cameo in the music video Inimel along with Shruti Haasan, whose screen presence and acting were received well. This raised eyebrows about his acting abilities, and now, as he is all set to make his feature film debut, fans are curious to know how his director’s stardom will work for his acting career. Coolie is all set to release on August 14, and people are keeping their fingers crossed for his shift to the lead position.
