Story:

Kubera tells the story of a staggering ₹1 lakh crore oil scam — a high-level conspiracy involving powerful ministers and top bureaucrats. To quietly transfer the black money, the masterminds recruit four beggars from across India as frontmen. One of them is Deva (Dhanush), a simple man surviving on the streets of Tirupati.

Uneducated and unaware, these men have no clue they’re being used in a dangerous money-laundering scheme. Orchestrating this operation is Deepak (Nagarjuna), a former CBI officer with a strong moral code — but even he finds himself reduced to a puppet in the hands of the corrupt system he once fought against.

As the scam spirals out of control, questions begin to rise:
Will the massive sum reach its destination? What unexpected twists threaten to expose the truth? How did Deva end up trapped in this game — and more importantly, can he find a way out before it’s too late? These questions drive the emotional and suspenseful core of Kubera.

Review:

Kuberaa is a strong turn-around for actor Dhanush as well as director Shekhar Kammula. Dhanush gives his best performance as Deva, a beggar whose hardships and compassion he depicts with immense realism. Leaving his star persona behind entirely, Dhanush owns the character so naturally that it is impossible to forget it. His subdued expressions and gesticulations bring each scene to life, and even his Telugu dubbing, for which there is a bit of Tamil accent, contributes to the realism.

Nagarjuna takes everyone by surprise with a subtle and mature performance of Deepak, a retired CBI officer trapped in corruption. His is one of the emotional touchstones of the film. Rashmika Mandanna is remarkable in a supporting role, with sincerity and charm in limited footage. Jim Sarbh lends depth to the negative character, demanding attention in every appearance. The supporting actors do a good job, beefing up the story.

Famous for soft-hearted dramas, Shekhar Kammula makes a daring transition with Kuberaa, offering a hard-hitting story of corruption, sacrifice, and survival.

The film builds up steadily but meaningfully, with a compelling first half followed by interesting interval twist. The second half keeps energy through charged scenes between Nagarjuna and Dhanush, even though there are some sequences better served by tighter scripting.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music works well with the film tone, the background score elevates emotional stakes as well as the songs like “Naadi Naadi” fit the story very well, and did not have commercial interruptions. Niketh Bommi’s cinematography captures the natural beauty and makes a great contribution to story-telling through its aesthetics. Production values are excellent throughout.

With Kuberaa, Shekhar Kammula deviates from his typical genre and presents a hard-hitting, emotionally intense film. From script to direction, he employs intensity and realism that people do not usually associate with him. This film is one of the most daring and finest in his body of work.
