Actress Kasthuri’s recent remarks regarding the Telugu community in Tamil Nadu have sparked major controversy, leading to defamation cases filed against her in Chennai and Madurai. Allegations claim that her comments about Telugu residents in the state were derogatory, igniting backlash from the community.
On Sunday, police visited Kasthuri’s residence in Chennai to serve a notice, but found the premises locked, leading them to believe she may be evading contact. In response, Kasthuri has now sought anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court, arguing in her plea that the cases were filed with intent to malign her. Justice Anand Venkatesh’s bench is scheduled to review her bail petition tomorrow, November 12.
The actress made the remarks during a November 3 protest organized by the Hindu Makkal Katchi in Chennai, where she was reportedly vocal about Telugu people’s historical role in Tamil Nadu, which many found offensive. Despite issuing an apology, Telugu associations in the state have maintained their stance and continue to press charges.
Kasthuri, who recently campaigned for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, faced criticism from her own party, with BJP leaders condemning her remarks. Her statement insinuated that the Telugu people in Tamil Nadu, originally brought centuries ago to serve in royal palaces, now assert a Tamil identity. This statement has led to growing discontent among Telugu residents across Tamil Nadu.
