Kamal Haasan’s Comments On Hooch Tragedy Draws Criticism

Universal Actor Kamal Haasan has landed in a controversy for his foot-in-mouth remarks after visiting the victims of the hooch tragedy which took away the lives of nearly 50 people and left several hospitalized in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. Kamal spoke to the media after coming out of the government hospital in Kallakurichi and his irresponsible comments on the tragedy resulted in huge backlash from all quarters.

Instead of holding the government responsible for the hapless incident, Kamal said the victims were careless and exceeded their limit which is the reason for the tragedy. He said tipplers should be careful and drink occasionally, but not regularly. He further said that the government should establish psychiatric centres to counsel drunkards over the ill effects of drinking.

Kamal also said that exceeding the limit in any form be it sugar or anything is bad. These remarks from the MNM party chief are met with sharp criticism from both the political circles and common people.

Many are pointing out that Kamal Haasan has got no guts to hold the DMK government under MK Stalin responsible for not cracking down on illicit liquor which is prevalent throughout the state. Some even said that Kamal’s scant knowledge on social issues is another reason why he failed as a politician.

It is a known fact that Kamal Haasan’s party lost deposit in all seats it contested in the 2019 assembly and parliament elections.
