Kamal Haasan Likely To Enter Rajya Sabha with DMK Support

Recently, Tamil cinema icon and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan has reportedly been on track to secure a Rajya Sabha seat with support from the DMK. A possible political maneuver started gaining traction through talks about this. Speculation encompassed the political move following a visit by Tamil Nadu Minister P.K. Sekar Babu to the residence of Haasan.

Haasan played a pivotal role in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by aligning MNM with the DMK-led INDIA bloc. His active campaigning contributed to the alliance’s clean sweep in Tamil Nadu, winning all 39 parliamentary seats. Insiders reveal that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had assured Haasan of a Rajya Sabha seat in recognition of his support. With six Upper House seats set to fall vacant in June 2025, recent developments suggest that the DMK is set to fulfill its commitment.

Confirming the offer, MNM spokesperson and filmmaker Murali Appas stated that the party has been allotted a Rajya Sabha seat. However, he emphasized that Haasan will decide on the nominee after discussions with party leadership. While he acknowledged the meeting with Sekar Babu, he refrained from sharing further details.

If Haasan joins the Rajya Sabha, it would become a watershed moment of the course of his political career and further augment the cooperation between MNM and DMK. Also, with the 2026 assembly elections approaching, this could very well set a new course for the political arena in Tamil Nadu.
