Suriya’s period action thriller Kanguva, directed by Siva, failed to achieve the expected success at the box office following its release last year. Addressing the film’s reception, actress Jyothika, Suriya’s wife, has now responded to the criticism, stating that Kanguva is superior to many commercially successful films that lacked quality.
Speaking on a talk show, Jyothika remarked, “Several subpar films in the South have performed well commercially, yet Kanguva received excessively harsh reviews. It seemed as though critics wrote them without discretion. While the film took some time to establish a connection with the audience and certain sequences may not have met expectations, the team put in immense effort to create a unique cinematic experience. The media’s approach to the film was unfair.”
Jyothika, who recently appeared in the web series Dabba Cartel, had previously shared similar sentiments. In an Instagram post, she acknowledged that the first half-hour of Kanguva did not work as intended and noted minor sound issues. However, she emphasized that such challenges are common in Indian cinema, particularly when attempting to explore new storytelling approaches.
