In the absence of a dedicated Home Minister, the law and order is alarmingly worsening in Telangana. There are allegations that some DCP-level officers are making settlements at police stations and meddling in real estate deals with the support of political leaders. Due to this, the law and order situation in the state is getting out of control and the number of crimes is increasing, as official statistics reveal.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has also kept the Home Ministry with him. Along with the Police Department, he has the key Municipal, Education and other departments not allocated to ministers. Due to this, there are criticisms that the CM is showing apathy towards the Home Ministry.
Law and order problems are arising due to not allocating a minister to the key Home Department and not reviewing it at least once every two months, even though he is supervising it. Crimes are increasing at a terrible rate. There are no records of CM-level reviews of the police department at least four or five times in the last 21 months.
The crime rate in the state is increasing drastically. There has been a 22.53 percent increase in serious crimes compared to the previous year. In the recent half-yearly crime review, DGP Jitender expressed concern over the increase in crimes. In 2024, 78 cases of theft and robbery were registered per day. More than 100 cheating cases are being registered across the state every day. Contract killings are again increasing exponentially in the state.
Last year, a 10 percent increase in all crimes was recorded in the crime rate. Reliable information has already increased by 8 percent in the past seven months of this year. It is reported that the number of crimes against women, SCs and STs has also increased by 10 percent in the state.
Last year, the murders of women increased by 13.15 percent. Cases of inciting girl children to commit suicide increased to 363. There has been a 29 percent increase in rape cases. Many say that the attacks on SCs and STs reflect the government’s negligent governance.
While 1,877 cases were registered against SCs and STs in 2023, 2,257 (20.24 percent) cases were registered in the first 11 months of last year. The attacks on Dalits in Pedda Dhanwada this year have already brought shame to the government.
