Hyderabad MP and Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (MIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi met with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss issues concerning the Waqf Board. The meeting focused on proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act by the central BJP government. Owaisi was accompanied by Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
CPIM Politburo member B.V. Raghavulu has expressed strong objections to the proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his handling of the central government and accused him of continuing to govern with a religious ideology. Raghavulu noted the contradiction in BJP leaders advocating for the exclusion of members of other religions from matters related to religion while simultaneously seeking to include members of other faiths in the Waqf Board. He labeled this as an example of double standards.
Raghavulu emphasized that the Waqf Board’s role is to manage properties and that government interference in this domain is inappropriate. He suggested that the government should respond to complaints of corruption rather than altering the Act. He accused the BJP of attempting to gain votes by creating communal divisions during elections in Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand.
While Raghavulu acknowledged that there might be shortcomings in the Uniform Civil Code and Common Civil Code, he criticized the term “Communal Civil Code” as an attempt by Prime Minister Modi to incite religious discord. He argued that while lower-level individuals might be understood, Modi is failing to act appropriately for his position as Prime Minister, and accused him of attempting to divide the nation rather than uniting it.
