High Court Rejects senior IAS Sri Lakshmi’s Discharge petition From Obulapuram Mining case

Senior IAS officer Sri Lakshmi has received a major setback from the Telangana High Court in the Obulapuram Mining Company case. The High Court has ruled that Srilakshmi is an accused in the case and also rejected the discharge petition filed by her. With this verdict, the case will now go for trial in the CBI court.

The High Court took this decision after carefully considering the arguments of the CBI and the respondents. The case began in 2006 after Sri Lakshmi took charge as the Secretary of the Industries Department. The CBI has alleged that Sri Lakshmi misused her power in the Obulapuram mining lease case.

The CBI has argued that the rules were violated in the allocation of leases and permissions were granted illegally.

The High Court has agreed with these arguments and found that Sri Lakshmi had misused her power and committed irregularities in the allocation of mining leases, as alleged by the CBI. In this context, the High Court also considered the revision petition filed by Sri Lakshmi.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the High Court to complete the hearing of the case within three months. As per these orders, the Telangana High Court completed the hearing and delivered the verdict within three months. Earlier, in 2022, the Telangana High Court had given a verdict discharging Sri Lakshmi from the case.

However, the CBI approached the Supreme Court saying that this verdict was given without considering the arguments of the respondents. With this, the Supreme Court has issued orders to the Telangana High Court to re-hear the case. In the latest hearing, the High Court has found Sri Lakshmi an accused in the Obulapuram mining case.  With this verdict, Sri Lakshmi’s discharge petition has been rejected.

Now the case will go for hearing in the CBI court. Here, a full-fledged trial will be held on the allegations against Sri Lakshmi. The Obulapuram mining case is one of the most talked about cases in Andhra Pradesh. In this case, the CBI has taken up an investigation into the nexus and irregularities between officials, politicians, and mining companies. The allegations against senior officials like Sri Lakshmi have further complicated the case.
