In a shocking development, a man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Shots aimed at senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal were fired inside the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning when the former deputy CM of Punjab was sitting on “punishment” guard duty.

The person was overpowered by people present on the spot and was nabbed. He was attacked while serving as part of religious punishment. According to information, Badal narrowly escaped the attack and is safe. Meanwhile, SAD has accused the Punjab govt of its failure to provide security. SAD said that they have no faith in the Punjab government asking, “Who will take responsibility for the attack?”

The man has been identified as Narain Singh Chaura. SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was also performing ‘tankha’ with Sukhbir Badal when the incident occurred.Chaura has been arrested.

Recently, the Akal Takht pronounced punishment to the Akali Dal leader after it found him culpable of supporting Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 2015 sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.

The punishments have been imposed by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on Badal and other senior Akali leaders, saying they were unfit to lead the Sikh community.

As part of the punishment, Sukhbir Badal and core committee members of the Akali Dal, including cabinet ministers from 2015, were ordered to clean toilets, serve in the langar (community kitchen), perform Nitnem (daily Sikh prayers), and recite Sukhmani Sahib. Placards were also placed around their necks as part of the sentence.

Due to health concerns, Sukhbir Badal and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa were instructed to serve as gatekeepers at the Guru’s abode for two days, donning traditional servant attire and holding spears as a mark of humility.
