Former Minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy has been arrested by Nellore police after evading arrest for a considerable time. Following reliable intelligence that he was hiding in Kerala, special police teams were deployed to track and apprehend him. Despite exploring every legal avenue—from the lower courts up to the Supreme Court—Kakani was unable to obtain any relief. Even after the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail petition, he chose not to surrender.
Kakani has been charged with serious offenses, such as illicit mining operations that led to the demolition of quartz worth hundreds of crores, and illegal use of explosives, among other offenses. When the cases were initially booked, he dared the authorities to arrest him, refusing to leave Nellore. But after hearing about the arrest warrant, he went into hiding.
Though the police issued several notifications calling him to appear, he did not turn up, expecting a positive court ruling which never materialized. Following the denial of his plea by the Supreme Court, everybody anticipated that he would turn himself in; however, he stayed on the run.
Eventually, the police located and arrested him before he could evade capture any further. Given his prolonged absence, it is anticipated that securing bail will be a difficult and lengthy process.
