Chennai: In a sensational statement, Tamil Nadu Minister and senior DMK leader Durai Murugan said that if the investigation into the Karur foot-stomp tragedy deems it necessary, the state would not hesitate to arrest TVK president and actor Vijay. However, he clarified that the government would not take any partisan action and that unnecessary arrests would be avoided.
Speaking to reporters in Vellore on Saturday, Durai Murugan said, “The judge’s observation that Vijay lacked leadership qualities is appropriate. If circumstances warrant his arrest, we will certainly proceed with it.” The tragic incident on September 27, which claimed 41 lives, is under intense investigation, making the minister’s remarks highly significant.
The Madras High Court, treating the incident as a result of human negligence, ordered a special investigation team (SIT) under Chennai North Zone IG Asrra Garg. Following court directives, the investigation records from Karur City Police Station are being transferred to Chennai for the SIT to take over, elevating the case from routine inquiry to a high-level probe under court supervision.
Meanwhile, criminal cases under five sections have already been filed against TVK General Secretary N. Anand and Joint General Secretary Nirmal Kumar for alleged negligence leading to the tragedy. The High Court has also raised critical questions regarding Vijay and other party functionaries’ roles, particularly concerning his departure from Karur immediately after the incident, which drew widespread criticism.
In addition, Namakkal district police, reviewing footage from the campaign rally, are reportedly preparing to seize Vijay’s campaign bus. However, the High Court questioned the necessity of this action and indicated that only legal measures should be taken. Responding from Chennai, DMK Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi expressed confidence that the SIT team appointed by the High Court would conduct an impartial investigation.
