Popular Telugu filmmaker Maruthi has sparked discussion in the film industry with his candid remarks about the extreme reactions of some directors to box office failures. Speaking at the pre-release event of Beauty, starring Ankith Koyya and Nilakhi, Maruthi questioned why filmmakers resort to violent or irrational acts, such as hitting themselves or declaring they will quit filmmaking, after a flop. He described such behavior as “distressing” and “unnecessary,” stressing that it negatively affects the creative environment.
Maruthi indirectly referenced the recent incident involving the film Tribaanadari Barbarik, where the director reportedly struck himself with a stick following the film’s failure. “Even when people explained that the title was confusing, he didn’t listen. He seemed to be in a trance, feeling like a deity. I couldn’t oppose his belief, but seeing him react this way just because the movie flopped was very saddening,” Maruthi said. He further urged industry professionals not to resort to extreme measures and criticized efforts to coerce audiences into theaters, adding, “If one movie doesn’t work, another will. Why degrade yourself so much?”
Addressing criticism of his own career, Maruthi highlighted his growth and creative contributions. “Many call me a ‘nonsense director,’ but no one can write as many meaningful dialogues as I have. I create content for families to enjoy. Today, the same ‘nonsense director’ is making The Raajasab, a 400-crore project with Prabhas. My journey shows that even after a flop, opportunities come when talent is recognized,” he stated. The video of Maruthi’s remarks has gone viral on social media, generating widespread attention and debate across Telugu cinema circles.
