Former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his sister and APCC chief YS Sharmila Reddy, who have turned as bitter political opponents in recent times, have probably for the first time expressed their concern on the same day over the proposed move of the Narendra Modi-led government on delimitation.
On the same day, when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was holding a meeting with non-BJP parties on this issue in Chennai, Jaganmohan Reddy in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanded that injustice should not be done in delimitation.
YS Sharmila said that for the southern states’ issue on delimitation is not political, but a fight for the rights of the people and there is no question of accepting re-division on the basis of population. Jagan has written a two-page letter to Prime Minister Modi and requested that the delimitation process be carried out so that no state loses its representation in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and does not suffer any loss.
He stated that a situation should be ensured in which the seats of the respective states in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the basis of population should not be reduced. It was clarified in the statement that there is a feeling in the southern states that the delimitation process based on the 2026 census will cause losses. It was revealed that the redistribution of constituencies based on population is a concern for the southern states, which are ahead in population control.
Jagan clarified that the share of the southern states in the population had declined by 1971 and it will reach its lowest in the next 15 years. It was revealed that the southern states, which had committed to population control, which was a national priority at that time, have now become a problem. However, Jagan welcomed the announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that there will be an increase in seats in all states.
Meanwhile, Sharmila deplored that YSRCP chief Jagan’s silence on this issue was an indirect support to Modi. She asked that the TDP, YSRCP and Jana Sena parties should put politics aside on delimitation and come forward. She warned that the dominance of the North will increase further and will be rendered useless due to the priority of the South states.
She further warned that a situation of “money from the South” and “luxury for the North” will inevitably arise. She made it clear that there is no room for complacency in doing Limitation for the South in the name of delimitation.
