Kejriwal, Kavitha To Stay In Jail Till May 7

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha’s custody has been extended by 14 more days in the Delhi liquor case. The federal probe agency has alleged that the accused were in touch with Kejriwal for formulating the now-scrapped excise policy that resulted in undue benefits to them, in return of kickbacks to the AAP.

Special judge for CBI and ED cases Kaveri Baweja extended custody of the Aam Aadmi Party leader and Kavitha after they were produced before the court through video conference on expiry of their remand. Kavitha is also under judicial custody in the ED case registered in connection with the alleged scam. Recently, the special court reserved orders on Kavitha’s bail plea till May 2.

Kejriwal, arrested by the agency on March 21 after the high court refused to grant him interim protection from coercive action, has also challenged the constitutional validity of certain provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act with respect to arrest, questioning and grant of bail.

In the plea, Kejriwal has raised several issues, including whether a political party is covered under the anti-money laundering law. It alleged that the arbitrary procedure under PMLA was being used to create a non-level playing field for the general elections to “skew the electoral process in the favour of the ruling party at the Centre”.

Meanwhile, the CBI had arrested the Telangana MLC and daughter of former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao from Tihar Jail, where she was lodged after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case stemming from the alleged scam.

The CBI is probing alleged corruption in the formulation and execution of the AAP government’s excise policy, while the ED is investigating the money laundering aspect.

Non Resident Indians (NRIs) have been showing political developments of two Telugu states for the last few decades. Particularly, both TDP and BRS have strong presence of NRI cells in several foreign countries, mobilising support of Telugu people settled there.

Even these parties are getting a good amount of funds from NRIs every year. In recent times, the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh is also focusing on NRIs support. However, in recent times they are taking part in electoral politics.

Two resourceful former NRIs, who are contesting are probably the richest candidates in the present Lok Sabha polls all over the country.  While, Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar is contesting from Guntur Lok Sabha seat of Andhra Pradesh as TDP candidate, Konda Visveshwara Reddy is contesting as BJP candidate from Chevella of Telangana.

Chandrasekhar has emerged as the richest candidate in the country  with family assets of more than Rs.5,705 crore, as per his affidavit submitted during filing nomination papers. He has been trying for a TDP ticket for a decade to contest from his native Narasaraopet Lok Sabha seat.

He has also emerged as a good mobilizer of donations to TDP from USA and some other European countries. This time TDP chose him to field from Guntur, which is considered to be one of the fortes of the party. Guntur is among three Lok Sabha seats it has won in 2019 polls against YCP wave.

After completing his MBBS at NTR Medical University of Health Sciences in 1999, Pemmasani went to the US and finished PG in Internal Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania in 2005 and became a successful physician.

He is the founder and CEO of UWorld, an online learning platform. He and his wife are major shareholders in various companies, including Go4Funding, Pemmasani Huffman Investments, Pemmasani Interests, Aspen Publishing. Pemmansani’s family owns bonds and shares worth Rs 5550,82,38,466 in 101 public listed companies in the US.

Meanwhile, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy is not new to electoral politics. He has been contesting from Chevella since 2014. He has declared family assets of Rs 4,568 crore.  First time he had won as BRS candidate, but in 2019 he was defeated with a narrow margin as Congress candidate. This time he is trying his luck as a BJP candidate.

Vishweshwar Reddy had worked with electrical giant GE in the USA and later set up his own business in New Jersey. He is the grandson of the late Konda Venkata Ranga Reddy, the Congress leader after whom Ranga Reddy district was named. Former Chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy was Ranga Reddy’s son-in-law.

CAT Questions Senior IPS ABV Suspension Again On Same Grounds!

The case of AP Senior IPS Officer AB Venkateshwar Rao  has been postponed to 29th of this month. Venkateswara Rao has approached

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has asked the AP State government advocate how senior IPS officer AB Venkateshwar Rao was suspended a second time on the same charges. CAT on Tuesday examined the case when Rao challenged the state government suspending him a second time.

The bench said that no note was on file. It questioned how four times the charge sheet could be justified. The bench commented that the record is not relevant to the argument of the Advocate General. It also asked why no attention was paid when AB Venkateswara Rao has given a clear reply on the issues of Pegasus software procurement and his comments in the media.

It said that suspending for the second time without review is illegal. The Central Administrative Tribunal, which questioned the second hearing on the same allegations, adjourned the next hearing to 29th of this month.

It may be recalled AB Venkateswara Rao served as the head of the State Intelligence Department in the previous TDP government. During the 2019 elections, the EC removed him from office after YCP filed complaints against him. And after YS Jagan came to power, the YCP government accused ABV of buying some equipment from Israel and tapping their phones and suspended him.

Then he joined the duties of ABV with the orders of the Supreme Court. But after he was suspended again for the second time. Then, AB Venkateswara Rao filed a petition in CAT challenging it. The bench examined the case file given by the state government during the hearing of the case last week.

After examining it, it questioned the government counsel as to where the material showing that the witnesses were threatened by AVB. Also, senior advocate Adinarayana Rao on behalf of ABV said that there are factual errors in the written arguments filed by the government.

He stressed that the suspension imposed on AVB is invalid and will not continue. Even after ABV was reinstated by the Supreme Court, suspending it for the second time on the same charges is against the rules, he said.

Setback To YCP MLC Thota Trimurthulu In AP High Court

AP High Court gave a shock to Mandapeta YCP candidate  Thota Trimurthulu in dalits tonsure case. The High Court refused to stay the 18 months jail sentence given by Visakha SC and ST Court.

In this 28 years old case, the court giving jail sentence to Trimurthulu and two others, postponed the same for a month so as to approach the High Court. Three of them filed a petition in the High Court challenging Visakha Court verdict and also to stay the jail sentence.

The High Court, which heard the petition on Tuesday, refused to stay the jail sentence. The case was adjourned to May 1 for further hearing. As Trimurthulu failed to get a stay order from the High Court, now pressure is mounting on the YCP leadership for change of the candidate from Mnadapet.

Already, the ruling party is attracting the ire of the dalits as it has been fielding those who are named in cases harassing dalits. Party MLC Ananth Babu, who is facing allegations of killing his dalith driver, is contesting from Rampachhodavaram constituency, in the tribal belt.

Though the jail sentence is below two years, there is no legal hurdle for Trimurthulu to contest in the elections, as it is a SC and ST atrocity case, the ruling party is likely to consider the political impact of fielding him as candidate even after he was sentenced.

As only two more days left for filing nomination papers, the YCP leadership is forced to take a decision on his candidature immediately. According to sources, the party leadership has already started consultation on this issue.

If  Thota Trimurthulu is also continued as a candidate, YCP leadership fears that it will provide a lot of ammunition to the opposition parties to provoke Dalits against the ruling party. As they are a key vote bank for the party, it would be a great risk.

In this regard, former minister and Rajya Sabha member Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose name is going round in YCP circles to replace Thota Trimurthulu from Mandapeta.

Venkaiah Naidu Says Party Defections A Disturbing Trend

Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu expressing deep concern over leaders defecting from one party to another frequently, said that it is a very disturbing trend.

At a meet and greet program held in his residence in Delhi, he was felicitated by Telugu Associations, celebrities and Journalists on Tuesday, after he was awarded Padma Vibhushan by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday evening.

He lamented leaders who quit their parties to join and fight elections for others. “In the morning you are in one party, in the afternoon you join the other one. The next day you get a ticket to fight the election. First, you are praising your new leader and then you abuse your former leader. This is a new trend. You were adoring someone today, you joined the other party and abused the first leader. It is a disturbing trend,”

He said he was not referring to any particular party but “talking in general”.although changing parties was permitted in a democracy, the leader should resign from all posts they received in the party before jumping ship. “I can understand about accusations but using abusive language should be avoided,” Naidu said.

However, he said that he was happy that he had stuck to one party — the BJP— in his political career of five decades.Naidu, who has also served as Union Minister and was the BJP’s national president from 2002 to 2004, said the trend of political parties announcing freebies was an “unhealthy trend”. According to him, parties when announcing schemes should specify how they will fund them.

“People are promising schemes left and right … Paisa kahan hai (where is the money)? They should explain. I am against freebies. I would say only education and health should be free. All other freebies should be discouraged,” he said.

BJP Flays Revanth Fears conviction In cash-For-vote scam

BJP Legislature Party Leader A Maheshwar Reddy made a sensational comment that Chief Minister A Reanth Reddy is fearing conviction in a cash-for-vote scam. As a result, he said that he is not sure that he can continue as chief minister for a long time.

As the case is coming before the Supreme Court soon, the BJP leader said that the chief minister is fearing that the Apex court may send him to prison. He made these allegations referring to Revanth Reddy’s unusual comments on Sunday stating that his ministerial colleague  Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy has all eligibility to become chief minister, but Congress party chose him in certain circumstances.

It may be recalled that Venkat Reddy was a strong contender for Chief Minister’s post after Congress won in last year’s assembly elections in the state and also he was a bitter critic of Revanth Reddy. Strongly opposing the party high-command decision to appoint him as TPCC President, he had vowed not to enter party headquarter Gandhi Bhavan, as long as Revanth continued in that position.

In view of this bitter relations between these two leaders, BJP leader felt that Revanth Reddy was now promoting Venkat Reddy’s name for Chief Minister’s post fearing his own arrest in the case.

“I think Revanth is not sure of continuing in the post of CM till August. He may be forced to leave the post in the wake of hearing of the cash-for-vote scam on July 24 in the Supreme Court,” he said.

“Usually Congress high command decides about the CM, but I don’t know why he is taking the name of Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. We don’t know he might have made similar promises to other Congress leaders too,”he added.

Moreover, Maheshwar Reddy felt that Revanth bringing name of Komatireddy may be seeking peace with him so that to ensure stability of his government, after BRS chief KCR claimed a senior Congress leader was in touch with him promising to bring 20 MLAs. He said Komatireddy may be that leader.

Congress Moves EC Against PM Modi’s ‘Infiltrator’ Remarks

The Congress party has moved to the Election Commission in response to a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public rally in Rajasthan. Opposition parties are voicing their concerns over the statement, which has sparked controversy.

Specifically, Congress leaders, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi, have lodged a complaint with the Election Commission regarding the Prime Minister’s remarks about Muslims.  Following their complaint to the Election Commission, Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed gratitude for the Commission’s attention to their concerns.

Singhvi highlighted that there are 17 complaints in total, but he focused on highlighting three or four specific issues. He emphasised the need for swift action from the Commission in response to the Prime Minister’s remarks.

Singhvi underscored the importance of respecting the position of the Prime Minister while urging the Commission to promptly address the concerns raised regarding the statement made in Rajasthan. He described the statement as objectionable, citing its mention of a particular community and religion in connection with infiltrators.

Singhvi further highlighted that Prime Minister Modi referenced the community and religion. “The PM’s statement said the community or religion has been linked to the infiltrators,” Singhvi said.

He further emphasized that secularism is a core aspect of the Constitution’s basic structure and called on the Election Commission to take decisive action in response to such remarks. He framed the issue as one concerning the dignity of the nation, underscoring the importance of addressing it promptly.

During an election rally in Rajasthan on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi stirred controversy by stating that “if Congress comes to power at the Centre, it would confiscate people’s property and distribute it among minorities.”

PM Modi attributed this claim to a statement reportedly made by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in which Singh allegedly stated that the minority community has the ‘first right’ on the country’s resources.
