Crackdown On Opposition Reaches A Crisis Point Ahead Of National Elections, Says Amnesty

Responding to the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi state Chief Minister and opposition leader from the Aam Aadmi Party, along with freezing of bank accounts of another leading opposition party, Indian National Congress, Aakar Patel, chair of board at Amnesty International India, said:

“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Indian government’s crackdown on peaceful dissent and opposition has now reached a crisis point. The authorities have repeatedly exploited and weaponized various financial and terrorism laws to systematically crackdown on human rights defenders, activists, critics, non-profit organisations, journalists, students, academics and political opposition”.

He deplored that the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of Indian National Congress’ bank accounts a few weeks before India holds its general elections show the authorities’ blatant failure to uphold the country’s international human rights obligations.

“What we are witnessing is a brutal crackdown on human rights including through the misuse of central investigative and financial agencies, attacks on peaceful protests, arbitrary arrests, use and export of invasive spyware for unlawful surveillance, systematic discrimination against religious minorities to feed into their majoritarian Hindutva politics and targeted suspension of opposition leaders from the Parliament who dare to hold the authorities to account” he added.  

He felt that the growing crackdown clearly shows the authorities’ blatant disregard for human rights and rule of law. He said that authorities must respect, protect, promote and fulfil the human rights of everyone in the country including human rights defenders, activists, and opposition candidates before, during and after the general elections which are due to begin in April 2024.

 Authorities must also ensure access to justice and effective remedies for victims of human rights violations.  “State institutions must be allowed to function independently and effectively. Authorities must stop weaponizing the criminal justice system to intimidate and harass human rights defenders, activists and opposition candidates.”

సరిగ్గా ఎన్నికల ముంగిట్లో అధికారంలో ఉన్న వైఎస్సార్ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీకి పెద్ద కష్టమే వచ్చి పడింది. విశాఖలో పట్టుబడిన కంటైనర్ లోని లక్షల కోట్ల విలువైన డ్రగ్స్ దందాలో వారి పాత్ర సందేహాస్పదం అవుతోంది. వైసీపీ నాయకులు సమస్తంగా రంగంలోకి దిగి, వారి నీలిమీడియా సహాయంతో డ్రగ్స్ దందాను తెలుగుదేశం మీదికి, బిజెపి మీదకు నెట్టాలని చూస్తున్నారు. కానీ.. ఎదుటివారివైపు ఒక వేలు చూపుతోంటే.. మిగిలిన నాలుగువేళ్లు నీవైపే చూపుతుంటాయనే సామెత లాగా.. వైసీపీ వారి పాత్ర గురించే ఎక్కువ సందేహాలు పుడుతున్నాయి.


సంధ్యా ఆక్వా పరిశ్రమ కోసం బ్రెజిల్ నుంచి వచ్చిన డ్రై ఈస్ట్ కంటైనర్ లో లక్షల కోట్ల విలువైన మత్తుపదార్థాలు ఉన్నట్టు సీబీఐ అధికారులు గుర్తించారు. పరీక్షల్లో కొకైన్, హెరాయిన్ వంటి అత్యంత ఖరీదైన మత్తుపదార్థాలు ఉన్నట్టుగా గుర్తించారు. అప్పటినుంచి రాష్ట్రంలోని రాజకీయ పార్టీలు ఒకరిమీద మరొకరు ఆరోపణలు చేసుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాయి. సంధ్యా ఆక్వా అనే పేరు క్లియర్ గనుక.. వారితో ముడిపెట్టి తమ ప్రత్యర్థులకు సంబంధం ఉన్నట్టుగా చెప్పడానికి ఆరాటపడుతున్నాయి. కానీ వైసీపీ వాదనలు తేలిపోతున్నాయి.

వైసీపీ చెబుతున్నది ఏంటంటే.. సంధ్యా ఆక్వా వీరభద్రరావుతో.. బిజెపి రాష్ట్ర సారథి పురందేశ్వరి వియ్యంకుడు వ్యాపార భాగస్వామి అని! కానీ అది చాలా సంవత్సరాల కిందట. ఇప్పుడు వారు విడిపోయారు కూడా. వారి మధ్య వ్యాపార లావాదేవీలు లేవు. ఈ ఆరోపణ చేస్తూ.. పురందేశ్వరి కొడుక్కి ఈ దందాతో సంబంధం ఉందని వైసీపీ బురద చల్లుతోంది. కానీ బిజెపి ఆరోపిస్తున్నది.. వైసీపీని ఇరుకున పెట్టే వ్యవహారమే.

ఎందుకంటే- స్వయంగా సంధ్యా ఆక్వా వీరభద్రరావు తమ్ముడు వైఎస్సార్ కాంగ్రెస్ నాయకుడు. ఆ విషయం స్పష్టంగా ఎస్టాబ్లిష్ చేస్తూ ఫ్లెక్సిల ఫోటోలను కూడా ఆ పార్టీ బయటపెట్టింది.

పైగా ఏ దేశంనుంచైతే ఈ డ్రగ్స్ వచ్చాయో.. ఆ బ్రెజిల్ దేశాధ్యక్షుడితో వైసీపీ జాతీయ ప్రధాన కార్యదర్శి విజయసాయిరెడ్డికి సంబంధాలున్నట్టుగా బయటకు వచ్చింది. బ్రెజిల్ అధ్యక్షుడికి పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు చెబుతూ విజయసాయి ట్వీటారు కూడా. ఈ విషయాన్ని బయటపెడుతూ ఎంపీ రఘురామక్రిష్ణ రాజు- ‘‘అసలు మన దేశంలో ఉండే నాయకుల్లో కనీసం ఒక్క శాతం మందైనా బ్రెజిల్ అధ్యక్షుడి పేరు చెప్పగలిగితే తన వేలు కోసుకుంటానని’’ ఆయన సవాలు విసిరారు. విజయసాయికి బ్రెజిల్ అధ్యక్షుడు లూయిజ్ ఇనాసియో లూలా డా సిల్వా తో సంబంధాలు ఉన్నట్టు ట్వీట్ సహా ఆయన నిరూపించారు.

మొత్తానికి ఈ డ్రగ్స్ దందా వ్యవహారం మొత్తం.. వైసీపీ పుట్టిముంచేలా కనిపిస్తోంది. వారు తెదేపా, బిజెపికి పురందేశ్వరికి ముడిపెట్టడానికి చేస్తున్న ప్రయత్నాలు నమ్మేలా లేవు. అదే వారి పార్టీ వారి పాత్ర మాత్రం ఘాటుాగా ఉన్నట్టు కనిపిస్తోంది.

TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu seems to be following a completely different format in selection of candidates for the forthcoming elections. While releasing the first list of candidates, he said that during four decades of his political life he didn’t make such strenuous efforts.

The way he is securing the point of lakhs of supporters and voters before taking a decision reveals that he is focusing on emergence of new leadership in the party to meet growing challenges. He is not hesitating to deny seats for some traditional leaders like Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Devineni Umamaheswar Rao, Alapati Rajendra Prasad and Bandaru Sathyanarayana Murthy.

However, he accommodated some `opportunistic’ leaders, who were silent for the first four years of YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s repressive regime, looking after their businesses and became active only ahead of elections.  This shows that Naidu hesitated to completely revive the party machinery.

In several constituencies, he has given preference to ‘new generation’ leadership, giving chances for children, keeping elder leaders away from electoral politics. In some constituencies, he chose very fresh faces also, giving prominence to ‘clean image’ and `community support’ in respective constituencies.

Chandrababu Naidu also expressed his respect to the families of tall leaders of the party, who died earlier. G Harish Madhur, TDP’s candidate from Amalapuram Lok Sabha constituency is the son of former Lok Sabha speaker G M C Balayogi, who died in a chopper crash in 2002.

Likewise, sons of Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu (Nagiri) and Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy (Srikalahasthi) were accommodated.

Two YSRCP MPs figured in the latest list. Narasaraopet YSRCP Lok Sabha member L Sri Krishnadevaraya has been fielded from the same constituency, while V Prabhakar Reddy, a YSRCP Rajya Sabha member, will contest from Nellore.

Surprisingly, T Krishna Prasad, who will contest from the Bapatla Lok Sabha constituency, is a former IPS officer and BJP’s spokesperson in Telangana. He failed to get a party seat in recent assembly elections from Secunderabad Cantonment constituency. Now is lobbying for the Warangal Lok Sabha seat. But suddenly his name appeared in Andhra Pradesh TDP list.

After much deliberations, held across Bhubaneswar and Delhi, the BJD and BJP  have decided not to form an alliance, with Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal declaring Friday that the party would fight all the 21 Lok Sabha constituencies and 147 Assembly seats alone in the coming simultaneous polls.

In his statement, Samal thanked the Naveen Patnaik -led BJD for its support to the BJP government at the Centre at key moments, but said the BJP did not agree with the BJD government on many issues pertaining to “the interests of Odia people”, like “Odia asmita (pride)”, and “Odia glory”.

Though there was no official reaction from the BJD to Samal’s statement till Friday evening, party leaders said it was ready to fight alone. According to sources, BJD was reluctant to meet BJP’s ambitious plan to contest half of the seats in the state.

Eventually the talks fell through on the contentious issue of sharing of Assembly seats. The BJD reportedly did not want to contest on anything less than 100 of the 147 Assembly seats, in the only state where it has a presence. But the BJP insisted on around 57 seats.

Sources said the parties could not agree on a power-sharing formula post-elections either. The BJP’s plans to field certain rebel BJD leaders in the elections did not go down well with the BJD either. Samal was in Delhi till days ago, holding meetings with central leaders.

 Announcing that there would be no alliance via a post on X, he wrote that the BJP would fight under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi “to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of 4.5 crore people of the state”. Samal said that all the states with “double-engine governments” had seen a spurt in growth and welfare, but that in Odisha, “many welfare programmes of the Modi government could not reach the grassroots. Many people are deprived”.

The high-profile arrest of BRS chief and former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter and BRS MLC K Kavitha is said to be only to facilitate the arrest of Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Aravind Kejriwal, who turns to be hard-nut for the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.

It may be recalled that Kejriwal revealed last month that he received some offers from top BJP leaders to avoid alliance with Congress, so that he can also avoid any stern action by central probe agencies against him.

Kavitha’s arrest was also said to be intended to sent a strong warning to Kejriwal asking him to keep away from Congress. As now Kejriwal arrest was executed, the central probe agencies are said to be considering various options to facilitate Kavitha’s release from jail.

According to high-placed sources, Kavitha is likely to become the government witness in Delhi excise police-linked money laundering case. It is interesting to note that already as 15 keey persons in this case have already testified themselves as the government’s witness in the matter.

Moreover, some key persons closely associated with YSRCP like Sarath Chandra Reddy were also released from bail after they turned as `approvers’.  

Kavitha was arrested after a day-long questioning followed by a raid at her Hyderabad residence on March 15. The action came almost two months after the ED issued summons to the 45-year-old BRS MLC. She was questioned thrice in this case last year, with the central agency recording her statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The BRS leader claimed earlier that she did nothing wrong and alleged that the BJP at the Centre was “using” the ED as it could not gain a “backdoor entry” into Telangana.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday night from his residence, has been sent to six-day ED custody by Rouse Avenue court in Delhi. The probing agency had sought a 10-day custody of the Delhi Chief Minister as it accused him of the ‘kingpin’ of the liquor policy.  

The Enforcement Directorate Friday said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was a “key conspirator” in the liquor scam case along with other ministers and AAP leaders, as it sought his 10-day custody from a court here.

The ED told Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at the Rouse Avenue court that Kejriwal received several crores of rupees as kickbacks from the ‘South group’ for formulating and implementing Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The Enforcement Directorate Friday said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was a “key conspirator” in the liquor scam case along with other ministers and AAP leaders, as it sought his 10-day custody from a court here.

The ED told Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at the Rouse Avenue court that Kejriwal received several crores of rupees as kickbacks from the ‘South group’ for formulating and implementing Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

He demanded Rs 100 crore from some accused from ‘South group’ for contesting the Punjab elections, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, who is appearing for the agency, told the court. The law officer said the money trail showed that Rs 45 crore “kickback” used in Goa elections came from four hawala routes.

He said the statements of the accused and witnesses have been corroborated by Call Detail Records (CDR). The AAP chief was produced before the court around 2 pm amid tight security on and around the court premises.

Kejriwal was produced in the trial court shortly after he withdrew from the Supreme Court his plea against arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the excise policy-linked money laundering case.

TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu’s announcement of party candidates for 13 Lok Sabha seats is said to be a slap in the face for many BJP veteran leaders, who are hoping to contest in some of those constituencies. These veterans include those having proximity with chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and also some former TDP leaders.

In fact, for the last two years these leaders are focusing on certain constituencies, hoping to contest in the polls. After BJP decided to have an alliance with TDP, they felt it would be certain for their winning in the polls, with the support of TDP and Jana Sena.

But surprisingly, Chandrababu Naidu shelved their hopes by convincing BJP high-command that it would be difficult for them to win from those constituencies, where TDP candidates are having better chances. He made a detailed presentation on ground realities.

BJP high-command also showed more interest in winning a number of seats, than accommodating some `self-styled’ leaders. So it has given a green signal for Naidu’s proposals.

BJP’s Rajya Sabha member G V L Narasimha Rao, whose tennue coming to an end in a few days, is cultivating Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat for the last two years. Even some RSS leadership also brought pressure to keep up this seat, stating it was earlier in 2014 was won by BJP.

BJP and RSS leaders are hoping to keep up this seat. But with the announcement of the TDP candidate, now it is clear that GVL, whose proximity with YSRCP is well known, cannot contest in the polls.

Likewise, former TDP MPs Sujana Choudary and CM Ramesh are eager to contest in Lok Sabha polls for the first time. While Sujana Choudhary eyed Vijayawada or Eluru, CM Ramesh insisted for Anakapalli or Visakhapatnam. But the TDP list dashed their hopes.

In the same way, former state BJP chief Somu Veerraju is keen to contest from Rajahmundry. But the present trend shows it may not be possible for him. Ambitious All India secretary Sathya KUmar is keen to contest from Hindupur. Both state vice president Vishnuvardhan Reddy and Swamy Paripoornananda are also aspiring for this seat. But now TDP announced its candidate.

Now, only seats left for BJP are Araku, Vizianagaram, Narsapur, Rajahmundry, Tirupati and Rajampet, which were originally offered by Chandrababu Naidu, last month when he met home minister Amit Shah. TDP circles stating that for the first time Chandrababu Naidu took a firm stand without bowing down to pressures.

రాష్ట్రంలో ఎక్కడ చూసినా భయానకమైన పరిస్థితులు నెలకొంటున్నాయి.  అధికార పార్టీకి చెందిన గూండాలు పోలీసుల సహకారంతో  విచ్చలవిడిగా చెలరేగిపోతున్నారు. తెలుగుదేశం పార్టీ కార్యకర్తలు ఇద్దరుని హత్య చేయడం ఒక సంచలనం.  తెలుగుదేశం పార్టీకి చెందిన కార్యకర్తల వాహనాలను తగులపెట్టడం ఒక దుర్మార్గం.  వీటి గురించి ఎన్నికల సంఘం విచారణ పూర్తి చేసి ఇంకా చర్యలు తీసుకోక ముందే..  రాష్ట్రమంతా మరింత ఘోరంగా వైసీపీ దళాలు దాడులకు తెగబడుతున్నాయి.ఎన్నికల షెడ్యూల్ వచ్చిన తర్వాత కూడా నిబంధనలకు విరుద్ధంగా వైసిపి పోస్టర్లు సిద్ధం ఫ్లెక్సీలు ఏర్పాటు చేసి ఉండడాన్ని, కేవలం ఫోటో తీసి సి విజిల్ యాప్ ద్వారా ఎన్నికల సంఘానికి ఫిర్యాదు చేసినందుకు తెలుగుదేశం పార్టీ అభ్యర్థి మీదనే దాడికి తెగబడడం పరాకాష్ట.  ఎన్నికల సంఘం చురుగ్గా వ్యవహరించి నిబంధనలను మరింత కఠిన తరం చేయకపోతే,  మరింత కఠినంగా వ్యవహరించకపోతే రాష్ట్రంలో ప్రజాస్వామ్యం హత్య  మన కళ్ళముందే జరుగుతుందని  పలువురు అంచనా వేస్తున్నారు. 

 కడప అసెంబ్లీ అభ్యర్థి రెడ్డప్ప గారి మాధవి,  కూతురుతో కలిసి గన్నవరం మీదుగా కారులో వెళుతుండగా సిద్ధం ఫ్లెక్సీలు వైకాపా రంగుల ముద్రలు కనిపించాయి.  వాటి మీద ఫిర్యాదు చేయడానికి ఫోన్ లో ఫోటో తీశారు.

 అంతే,  నిమిషాల వ్యవహారాన్ని గన్నవరం వైసీపీ అభ్యర్థి వల్లభనేని వంశీ వాహనాలలో ఆమె కారును చుట్టుముట్టారు.  కారులోంచి కదలనివ్వలేదు.  ఆమె పోలీసులకు ఫిర్యాదు చేసిన కూడా,  వారు వచ్చారు తప్ప ఆమె మీద దాడికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్న వారిని గురించి పట్టించుకోకుండా నామినేషన్ కి రావాల్సిందిగా బలవంతం చేయడం ఈ ఉదంతంలో పరాకాష్ట.

 పోలీసులు అధికార పార్టీకి తప్పులుగా వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారని ఆరోపణలు చాలా కాలంగా ఉన్నాయి.  కనీసం ఇప్పుడు ఎన్నికల వాతావరణం వచ్చిన తర్వాత..  వ్యవహారం మొత్తం ఎన్నికల సంఘం చేతుల్లోకి వెళ్ళాక కూడా పోలీసులు నిష్పాక్షికంగా వ్యవహరించలేక పోతే దానిని ఎలా అర్థం చేసుకోవాలి.
