EC Summons DGP, CS Amid Fear Of Security At EVM Strong Rooms

The Central Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed its anger over the violent incidents that took place in many places including Palnadu and Chandragiri, even after polling. It is more worried over ruling party goons reported plots at strongrooms, where EVMs were deposited.

Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena has summoned Chief Secretary Jawahar Reddy and DGP Harish Kumar seeking explanation on the incidents of post-poll violence. He ordered the DGP to take immediate  action against those responsible for the riots.

As it was identified that YCP candidates were responsible for post-poll violent incidents, Meena directed to keep all such candidates under house arrest.  He said that probationary orders were promulgated under Section 144 in all such places and additional forces were deployed.

He warned that those responsible for such incidents will be booked and sent to jail. AP asked the DGP to arrest those who vandalized EVMs and send them to jail. He also warned that  strict action will be taken against the police who acted negligently in preventing the incidents that took place in many districts.  CEO MK Meena stated that a police picket has been set up in 715 areas in the state.

Meanwhile, no matter how many measures the Election Commission is taking the ruling party leaders are reportedly planning for large-scale manipulations at the strong rooms where the EVMs are kept. It is suspected that violent incidents taking place in Macherla, Karampudi, Tirupati, Tadipatri, Narasaraopet and other places were part of such a plot.

Opposition leaders alleged that the police force has completely failed to stop the attacks. In addition to this, some policemen are still paying attention to the YCP leaders in some areas. Police have identified seven policemen in Macherla, who had provided prior information on movements of additional forces to the local YCP candidate. They were kept under suspension.

In Four Phases Polling, AP Tops With 82% Voting

In the four phases of polling held so far, Andhra Pradesh has registered the highest turnout in the country at around 82 percent. In AP, Darsi assembly registered the highest polling of 90.99 percent in Prakasam district, followed by highest polling among LoK Sabha seats in Ongole with 87.07 percent.

Tirupati registered lowest polling among Assemblies with  62.32 percent, as against 65.9 percent in 2019, 65.9. Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha registered lowest turnout among Lok Sabha seats with 71.11 percent, as against 67 percent polled in 2019.

The number of postal ballots polled were almost doubled then last time. While as many as 56,000 postal ballots were rejected in 2019, this time due to care taken such rejection was avoided.

Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena said that out of a total of 4,13,33,702 voters in AP, 3,33,40,560 of them voted for 25 parliamentary constituencies and 3,33,40,333 voters were cast in 175 assembly constituencies. 227 voters, who voted for Lok Sabha did not voted for Assembly.

A total of 80.66 percent polling took place in the EVM polling. Moreover, 4.44 lakh postal ballots were received. If votes of elderly, disabled and those who voted at home also included, a total of 4.97 lakh people voted. He said that 81.81 percent (almost 82 percent) polling took place in AP.

Though the polling was to be concluded at 6 pm, a large number of voters were seen at many polling booths and in some booths it continued till 2 am next day. He said that there was a delay in handing over the EVMs. It was explained that due to weather problems, delay in polling in some places, rains in Konaseema and Srikakulam, polling was held till the early hours of the next day.

He said that polling continued immediately even where the EVMs were broken. Stating that observers have not recommended re-polling anywhere in the state, he said that EVMs of 175 Assembly and 25 Parliament centers have been secured in strong rooms.

He said that 350 strong rooms have been set up in 33 locations across the state and  separate centers have been set up for Lok Sabha and Assembly. He said that in 2019, 79.77 percent polling was done in AP, which is 1 percent more than the previous year.

CBI Court Permits CM Jagan’s Foreign Tour Till June 1

Soon after the polling was over in the state, Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy is leaving on a foreign tour with his wife and daughter and he will return only on June 1, ahead of counting of votes.

His foreign tour was confirmed after the CBI Court permitted him to travel abroad from May 16 to June 1. It is reported that Jagan will visit the UK, Switzerland and France as part of the tour. That means, as the counting of votes is on June 4, he will return home before the election results.

The CBI court allowed to travel with family members for 17 days in the UK, Switzerland and France. In 2013, when Jaganmohan Reddy, who was the main accused in the illegal assets cases of CBI and ED, was granted bail, the CBI court imposed a condition that he should not leave the country.

His PassPort was also surrendered before the court. So, Jagan seeks the permission of  the CBI court to go to UK, Switzerland and France along with his wife Bharti and daughter for a family vacation.

He told the court that his foreign visit will not affect the trial as the case is still at the stage of registration of charges. He said that he would comply with any conditions imposed by the court and requested permission to travel abroad.  He explained that he had gone abroad several times with the permission of the court in the past.

However, the CBI objected to Jagan’s request. The CBI argued that Jagan and the other accused were involved in the scam and obtained illegal financial benefits. The court brought to the notice that Jagan often goes abroad for some or other reason. It argued that Jagan came to the court only once after becoming Chief Minister.

The CBI said that the High Court had previously mentioned that Jagan and other accused were delaying the trial of the case by filing various petitions. Jagan, who is facing serious charges of financial crimes, has argued that it is not appropriate to seek exemptions and relaxation, using the delay in the trial as an excuse.

After hearing the arguments of both sides, the CBI court allowed Jagan to go abroad for 17 days. The judge ordered Jagan to give his travel details, phone numbers and mail to the court and the CBI before going abroad.

Attempt To Murder On Chandragiri TDP Candidate Nani In Tirupati

The cadres of TDP and its alliance partners were on fire after a brutal attack on Chandragiri TDP candidate Pulivarthi Nani on Tuesday, when he went EVMs stored in a strongroom at Sri Padmavathi Mahila University, was attacked by YCP goons.

The goons cornered him, attempted on his life, but timely intervention of his gunman saved his life. When gunmen opened fire into the air, they even attacked him. Both were admitted at SVIMS hospital.

As TDP cadre protested against this attack and resorted to agitation tensions mounted in the temple city and large scale police forces were mobilized. The Election Commission of India (ECI), which was on high alert, deployed central forces to prevent further violent incidents.

Nani went to the University to monitor the security arrangements at the EVMs stored in the strongroom. However, his vehicle was attacked by YCP goons, who were in large numbers there and his vehicle was destroyed.

Instead of taking action against YCP goons the police arrested Nani and remained silent spectators to the ruling party cadre’s violence.  TDP and its alliance parties activists assembled there in large numbers and started protesting on the road. They strongly condemned the attack on TDP’s Chandragiri candidate.

After learning about the attack, the ranks of the TDP organized a protest at the Women’s University. Activists chanted slogans against YCP MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, who was allegedly responsible for this attack. The police lathi-charged the protesters.

SP Krishnakant Patel came to the spot and reviewed the situation. Section 144 is being implemented at the university in the wake of tensions. Meanwhile, the police lashed out at the media representatives who were covering the protest. The media representatives protested against the misbehavior of the CI. They raised slogans to end police brutality.

TDP leaders are alleging that more than 150 people came and attacked them with rods and knives. They are questioning what the police are doing when they are roaming around the strong room with deadly weapons?

Another Allegations Of Sexual Harassment Against Bengal Governor

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose, who is furious against allegation of sexual harassment by a Raj Bhavan staffer and ordered no police should be allowed into Raj Bhavan premises for probe into allegations and also directed no staff member need not give any `evidence’ into this incident, is now facing another similar allegation.

Even before dust not cleared on this allegation, the city police have submitted a report to the Bengal home secretary on allegations of sexual harassment made by another woman against governor Ananda Bose. The allegation surfaced last year when the woman lodged a complaint directly with the chief minister and the police were directed to probe the claim, the police said.

However, no formal FIR has been drawn up yet. The police said this probe was not connected with the special enquiry team formed to investigate the complaint of a young Raj Bhavan staffer accusing Bose of molesting her in the governor’s house on April 24 and May 2.

A separate enquiry report on the allegations of the staffer was submitted to the  city police commissioner on May 11. That report had not been forwarded to the office of the home secretary till Tuesday evening.

A senior police officer said the alleged incident with the other woman happened in Delhi in January last year. “The woman has alleged that he (governor) had promised her help with a personal problem. He sent her to Delhi and arranged her accommodation in a star hotel through one of his relatives. He himself stayed in an official accommodation. The alleged incident happened during that trip,” the officer said.

A few months later, the woman reported the matter to the chief minister, based on which the CMO sought a report from the police. However, senior officers at Lalbazar were tightlipped about the contents of the report.

Even Raj Bhavan sources are also maintaining silence towards media enquiries including text messages to the governor and emails sent to the official ID of the governor and that of his secretary, seeking their reactions on the allegations of the woman and the subsequent police report to the home secretary.

Despite two reported physical harassment allegations against Bose, the police have not been able to draw up formal charges against him because the governor enjoys constitutional immunity under Article 361 of the Constitution.

TDP cadres in jubilation…. desperate mood in YCP

Mammoth response from people resulting in brisk polling and at several places voters queues at polling booths continuing till late night is leading to a jubilation among TDP cadre, while a state of desperation seen in YCP camps.

Participation of youth and women in large numbers and more than 6 lakh voters from neighbouring states voting here filled enthusiasm among TDP ranks. TDP leaders estimating that probable vote percentage crossing 80 per cent is certainly a reflection of strong `anti- government’ mood among voters.

TDP leaders are now predicting that the NDA alliance is likely to get 130 to 140 Assembly seats and up to 23 Lok Sabha seats.

TDP sources say that the NDA has gained an upper hand over the ruling party at every stage in terms of election strategies, operations and campaigning, and the voting pattern has also reflected that.

On the other hand, the YSRCP, which had displayed the majesty of `why not 175 seats’ before the polling, has now defied the expectations that it will win with 110 to 120 seats. The leaders of that party are analyzing according to the voting pattern that they will form the government even if it decreases a little more.

It is being analyzed that the volunteers have fully cooperated, and although the enthusiasm among the youth seems to have decreased slightly, overall it is positive. However, they are said to be more worried about apathy presented by some strongly supporting social groups, particularly Reddys in Rayalaseema. In several villages, those who were hyper active in 2019 polls are not seen much on the polling day.

More importantly, the timely alliance between TDP, Jana Sena and BJP was found as a checkmate to YCP’s aggressive campaign at gross-root. It has not only avoided division among anti- government votes, but also cadres of three parties seen working with harmony.

For the first time TDP announced its candidates for most of the seats in advance. This has led to avoid confusion among cadres and given ample time to focus on facing cruel tricks of the ruling party with determination.

Discontent development among government employees, business community and youth towards the state government also helped TDP and its allies in several constituencies.

Besides TDP, both Jana Sena and BJP are also seen happy with the good performance of their candidates in the polls.  Though CM Jagan focused on defeating Pawan Kalyan, now everyone is discussing the majority he is likely to get. Jana Sena is estimating that it would win 2 Lok Sabha and about 18 Assembly seats.

Chandrababu Says 400 Seats For NDA, Clean Sweep In AP

TDP chief and former chief minister  N Chandrababu Naidu expressed confidence that NDA is going to achieve 400 seats in this election. Similarly, he said that  this alliance is going to sweep in Andhra Pradesh.

He reached Varanasi on Tuesday to participate in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nomination filing program and said that Modi is working towards a `Vikasit Bharat’ (developed India) by 2047. He said that our country is going to play a vital role in global affairs ihe coming days.

Meanwhile, TDP leader Chandrababu complained to the Central Election Commission that there were 121 incidents of violence during the elections in Andhra Pradesh. He has written a 15-page letter to the Central Election Commission showing the details of the region-wise incidents along with photographs.

The letter was handed over to the Election Commission officials at Nirvachan Sadan in Delhi by the party’s National Election Coordinator Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar.  Naidu said that there have been more incidents of violence than ever before in many constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and the main reason for this is the failure of the police to deploy forces.

After the polling, Chandrababu, who spoke to reporters at the TDP central office in Mangalagiri, NTR Bhavan, said that the TDP ranks have broken the YSRCP conspiracies everywhere with the cooperation of the people.

He said the polling has reflected anti- government sentiments among all sections of people, more intensely among youth, women and employees. He expressed confidence that we are going to see unexpected results in this election.

Appreciating the enthusiasm shown by the people to vote and the dynamism that emerged from them, he said this is the beginning of a new history. He said that the desire to end anarchy and achieve democratic governance was evident in every voter who came to the polling stations.

Naidu sincerely thanked every voter who had come from hundreds and thousands of kilometers to cast their vote with the same determination and braved the financial burden, the heat of the sun and the difficulty of traveling to the polling centers for the state.
