The government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) has intensified its court fight against former CID Chief Sanjay, filing a petition in the Supreme Court to withdraw his bail. Following this petition, the Supreme Court has now served notices to him. Sanjay is accused of grave corruption charges, specifically related to money laundering during his time in the fire department. Officials in the Vigilance Department alleged that they have strong evidence for abuse of funds, and therefore charges were laid against him.
To escape arrest, Sanjay had previously approached the AP High Court seeking relief, which ordered him to be released on bail. The state government, however, is challenging that order, requesting that his bail be revoked. Sanjay has been without an official assignment ever since the new government came to power and was subsequently suspended. Multiple corruption cases are also pending against him, with sources speculating that further investigations may reveal more wrongdoing.
Speculation abounds that the legal issues are connected to his past activities, specifically his involvement in filing CID cases against previous Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. While critics would claim that the actions of the government could be politically motivated, the administration has exercised caution so as not to incur such criticism. Sanjay’s suspension and legal issues might also be attributed to his provocative press briefings about Naidu’s cases, which supposedly violated official guidelines.
Numerous IPS officers who had extensive powers during Jagan Mohan Reddy’s rule are being scrutinized today. Despite the ruling party’s failure to make mass arrests, legal action against some of the officials is growing in intensity. Most cases are being dealt with restraint, but some officers might still incur serious legal repercussions as investigations continue.
