Story:
Vasudevan (Sarath Kumar) is a devoted middle-class man who lives a modest life with his wife Shanti (Devayani), son Prabhu (Siddharth), and daughter Aarthi (Meetha Raghunath). Working as an accountant in a private firm, Vasudevan quietly carries a long-cherished dream — to buy a 3BHK home for his family, a symbol of stability and comfort.
After years of disciplined saving, he finally manages to pay an advance on the house. Just as that dream seems to be coming true, life throws an unexpected challenge his way. Vasudevan’s son Prabhu needs a large amount of money for admission to college. With no other option, Vasudevan gives up his dream, hoping his son will, one day, overcome what they are going through and turn his dream that he had to put on hold one day, into a reality.
The film beautifully explores whether Prabhu lives up to his father’s expectations. Does he complete his education and secure a job? Can he give his family the life his father always wanted for them? What personal battles does he fight to turn his father’s dream into reality? The rest of the film explores these questions in an emotional and relatable journey.
Review:
Siddharth returns in a great role with 3BHK, playing a character well within his screen image. Although his performance is not fresh, it is a genuine portrayal of the emotional transformation of Prabhu, with good variations in his looks and mannerisms changing according to various stages of life.
Veteran Sarath Kumar excels as Vasudev with a serene and forceful performance of a middle-class father of unyielding spirit. Devayani supports him well as his wife, and Meetha Raghunath, familiar to us from Good Night, is good as the sister of the lead character.
Chaithra is notable by being a complete character instead of the usual romance interest, which brings some freshness to the story. While Yogi Babu’s presence is felt, his characteristic comic touch is unfortunately absent, which makes his character underplayed.
Fundamentally, 3BHK delves into a theme that strongly appeals to India’s enormous middle-class base — the aspiration for a home. For several families, a house is not merely a physical entity; it represents security, pride, and identity. Sri Ganesh is to be commended for connecting with this emotional heartbeat. Nonetheless, for all good intentions, the film’s execution operates along a straightforward trajectory.
The initial half of the movie is about classic tropes: a diligent man’s aspiration to purchase a home, encountering obstacles that recur and hold up his plans. This repetition coupled with melodramatic points makes the tale somewhat predictable and less powerful. The trials that the family encounters sometimes are artificial rather than organically developed, which reduces emotional investment.
The pace picks up a bit in the second half as the focus moves to Prabhu’s professional woes, his interpersonal relationships, and the marriage of his sister. While the screenplay still falters here and there, the final 30 minutes pack an emotionally fulfilling punch — that one ought to live life not only for security but also for freedom and fulfillment. The climax is a warm and touching conclusion, making the overall experience worthwhile.
On the technical front, Amrit Ramnath’s background score effectively enhances the film’s emotional scenes, albeit sometimes feeling a bit overpowering. The cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan and Jithin is clean and visually appealing, while Rakendu Mouli’s dialogues add depth to the characters and story. The production quality throughout the film is commendable.
3BHK is a heartfelt and authentic depiction of middle-class dreams and their attendant sacrifices. Solid acting and an emotional center make it compelling, but a formulaic and sluggish script restricts its impact. For fans of grounded family dramas with emotional substance, 3BHK provides a valuable, single viewing.
