Atishi, First woman To Become Leader of Opposition In Delhi Assembly

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday has chose former caretaker Chief Minister Atishi as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly. The party MLAs and senior leaders met at the party office at around 1 pm, days after the party was voted out of power in the Capital.

She will be the first woman to become Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. The legislative party also discusses the agenda they will raise in the first session of the Assembly. The party’s national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also present at the meeting.

After being chosen as LoP, Atishi said, “The people of Delhi have given us the role of opposition. We will show what a strong opposition is by working. Modi ji had said that this will be passed in the first cabinet and on 8th March women will get Rs 2500 in their accounts. It will be our agenda to get these promises fulfilled. I had sent the CAG report to the Speaker before the elections. They are spreading confusion that he has presented this report.”

On Saturday, AAP held its first meeting with party workers and in charges of its frontal organisations. An audit of all functionaries at the Lok Sabha, district, assembly, and ward levels will be conducted within a week to assess their roles during the elections, party convenor and former environment minister Gopal Rai said.

The newly-elected Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will take oath on February 25 and a new speaker will be elected. In the three-day session, the ruling BJP government has said that 14 pending CAG reports against the performance of the previous AAP government will be tabled in the House on the second day.

The nod to table the CAG reports, which were pending since the tenure of the previous AAP government, was given by Rekha Guptha in the first  cabinet meeting. BJP leader Vijender Gupta has been nominated as speaker, whereas Arvinder Singh Lovely has been appointed pro-tem speaker in the meantime.

The BJP ousted AAP from power in Delhi, winning 48 of the 70 seats in the assembly polls held on February 5. Kejriwal and several top leaders of the party, including Manish Sisodia, also lost the elections.
