Suriya’s Karuppu Faces Tough Competition, Makers Eye April Release

Suriya, though he has a huge fan base, has been going through a rough patch with his recent movies not doing well at the box office. His recent movie Retro, didn’t deliver the expected results, which affected his image and market value. Though he has worked with renowned directors, these movies failed to reap the commercial success that everyone had expected, and now Suriya’s career is in need of a turnaround.

Suriya is currently acting in Karuppu, an action drama directed by RJ Balaji. The movie is already in post-production after it finished its shoot. With its action genre, Karuppu is bound to appeal to a broad demographic, especially fans of mass entertainment.

The movie was initially planned to be released during Sankranti, but with big-ticketed releases like Jana Nayagan starring Vijay (tentatively scheduled for January 9) and Parashakti (tough to release on January 14), the competition is stiff. Therefore, Karuppu makers are now planning to advance the release date. While the movies of Vijay and Sivakarthikeyan are making a huge wave, Karuppu has not yet gained the same kind of buzz, so there is a holdup in the announcement of the release date.

The Sankranti period is also seeing a fierce competition from big Telugu films, including Prabhas’s Raja Saab, Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu, Naveen Polishetty’s Anaganaga Oka Raju, and Ravi Teja’s 76, all scheduled for release. Given the crowded release window, the makers of Karuppu are now targeting an summer release date.
