Following the release of Coolie, fans were sure that director Lokesh Kanagaraj would divert his full attention to Kaithi 2 featuring Karthi. Indeed, during the promotions of Coolie, Lokesh himself had disclosed that the script for the long-awaited sequel was already in development and draft ready.
It was Kaithi that provided Lokesh with his big break—without so much pre-release hype, the film became a blockbuster and went on to establish the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). His career went into high gear with Vikram, which made him one of the most sought-after directors in Indian cinema.
Of course, everyone had high hopes for Coolie, expecting it to boost the LCU. But to the surprise of everyone, Lokesh released it as a solo entertainer. Although the movie performed well at the box office, many were of the opinion that it couldn’t quite measure up to the high watermark of Vikram and Kaithi.
As per reports, this reaction has possibly altered Lokesh’s blueprint. Rather than going on the floors with Kaithi 2 right away, the director is now reportedly plotting a record multistarrer with none other than Superstar Rajinikanth and Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan.
If it were true, this would be a one-time film experience. Lokesh had already given Kamal Haasan an all-time career comeback with Vikram, while his teaming up with Rajini in Coolie gave good returns but left audiences craving for more. A movie that unites both legends on the screen under his leadership would raise unprecedented expectations from Indian cinema.
While that happens, Kaithi 2 remains one of the most-awaited sequels, with the audience excited to see Karthi come back in his raw and raw avatar. Rumors also indicate that other LCU characters may be introduced in the narrative, which would take it to a newer level.
So far, there is no confirmation from Lokesh officially, but here’s a guarantee—whether he’s in Kaithi 2 or Rajini–Kamal multistarrer, the audiences can be sure of nothing less than a screen blast once he returns to the big screen.
