Governor Jishnu Dev Varma Refers Ordinance on BC Reservations For Legal Advice

The draft ordinance prepared by the Revanth Reddy government on the issue of providing 42% reservation to BCs reached Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Verma three days ago. However, there is tension in the political circles of the state as the governor has not yet announced his decision on the ordinance.

Since this has become a major issue, reliable information is being received that the governor is taking legal advice on the issues in the ordinance. Official sources said that he is discussing this issue with legal experts and examining all angles.

If the governor approves, 42% reservation for BCs in the state will come into effect in local body elections. Guidelines will also be sent to the State Election Commission in this regard. The state government has already alerted the officials to prepare the MPTC and ZPTC election schedule as soon as the ordinance gets the green signal from the governor.

The government has brought this ordinance with the aim of providing more opportunities to BCs in local bodies. Government sources are hoping that the governor will respond positively to this. Whatever the decision, the political heat in the state is likely to increase once again.

It is known that in the last assembly sessions, the state government approved the BC Reservation Bill and sent it to the governor. Governor Verma sent this bill to the center, but it is currently pending with the President. When the bill from the state assembly is sent to the center, doubts are being expressed about the cabinet approving the draft ordinance sent on the same issue.

If the governor approves the draft ordinance sent by the state cabinet, it will become an ordinance. If the bill is also approved by the president at the same time, will there be legal problems? It is reported that Governor Jishnu Dev Verma has sought the advice of legal experts with various doubts.

After the draft ordinance receives the governor’s approval, the government will have to introduce the ordinance in the form of a bill in the assembly for approval within six months. If the government does not introduce the ordinance in the assembly for any reason, the ordinance will cease to be ‘valid’ after the expiry of the six-month period.

That is why Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy took a strategic step and brought this ordinance. He believes that the local body elections can be completed by the end of the six-month period for the ordinance. He is confident that if the elections are completed within the deadline, no one will be able to do anything after that.
