Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has initiated strict measures following the deadly stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebrations. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the suspension of Bengaluru Police Commissioner and several senior police officials connected to the incident.
Additionally, the CM directed the immediate arrest of representatives from RCB, DNA Event Management agency, and Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA), instructing the Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take prompt action.
Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Siddaramaiah confirmed that the cabinet decided to form a one-member commission led by a retired High Court judge to probe the tragedy. The commission is expected to submit its findings within 30 days. Suspension orders have been issued against key police officials, including the Kabban Park Police Station Inspector, Station House Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and others responsible for stadium security.
The stampede, triggered by a massive crowd of RCB fans at the stadium, claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people. An FIR citing criminal negligence has been registered against multiple individuals and organizations linked to the event, following a complaint by RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna. The police continue their investigation into the incident.
