Former BRS leader and ex-Bodhan MLA Shakeel was detained by authorities at Shamshabad Airport on Thursday upon his return from Dubai. His detention is linked to a high-profile fatal accident case from 2022, where his son was allegedly involved.
The accident took place in Hyderabad in front of Praja Bhavan between 2022 and 2023 and caused the sad demise of two people in the morning hours. Initial investigations had already pinpointed Shakeel’s son Sahil as the main suspect in the case. The car used in the accident had been seized, but Sahil and one of his close friends allegedly went abroad soon after, which was questioned on grounds of evasion.
Back then, police interrogated Shakeel regarding the case. But rather than cooperating with the current investigation, he turned to the courts for legal recourse, which provided him with temporary protection. Rather than being instructed to help with the inquiry, Shakeel is said to have disobeyed the court’s instructions and ultimately left the country overseas.
Following the recent passing of his mother, Shakeel returned to Hyderabad on Thursday. With an active lookout notice against him, airport officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport detained him and notified the police. He was taken into custody at the airport itself.
Acknowledging the circumstances, authorities allowed Shakeel to attend his mother’s funeral after his request. Police officials confirmed that his formal arrest will follow the completion of the final rites.
