Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has urged the central government to support the aquaculture sector, which is suffering due to US tariffs. He appealed to the government to make efforts to exempt aqua products from these tariffs and support the farmers.
He has written a letter to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, stating that the fisheries sector plays a crucial role in the state’s GDP and requesting support to aqua farmers during the crisis.
He said that the US government has imposed a 27 percent import duty on seafood exports from India, and that seafood products worth $ 2.55 billion were exported from our country to the US in the financial year 2023-24.
He reminded that shrimp accounts for 92 percent of this. He explained that the aqua farmers will suffer due to the 27 percent import duty on India, which is a key exporter of shrimp to the US. He said that the US is imposing only 10 percent tax on exporters like Ecuador, which is indirectly harming our country and benefiting them.
In addition, Chandrababu revealed that our country’s exporters are already bearing the burden of 5.77 percent countervailing duty (CVD). He said that if all the duties are included, the difference in duties between Ecuador and India will be about 20 percent. He said that the new duty imposed by the US has come into effect from April 5, 2025, due to which this burden is being borne by all exports to the US.
The Chief Minister deplored that the products already procured in accordance with the orders received in the past have been packed and are in cold storages and ports, and due to the new rules, these products will be burdened with duties.
Meanwhile, CM Chandrababu Naidu expressed happiness over AP’s growth of 8.21 percent in constant prices for the year 2024-2025. The Central Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation has given this report. He commented that it is a collective victory of the people of the state.
On this occasion, CM Chandrababu tweeted that AP is rising. He reminded that during the YSRCP rule, the state had a growth rate of only 6.19 percent. He said that it increased by 2.02 percent to 8.21 percent in a year.
