In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Amaravati on April 15 to kickstart the reconstruction of the Andhra Pradesh capital. The visit marks a major step forward in resuming the halted capital development works, with the NDA government allocating ₹1 lakh crore for the project.
Amaravati’s foundation stone was initially laid by PM Modi on October 21, 2015, at Uddandarayunipalem, where he brought sacred soil from across the country. The then Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government, under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu, initiated the capital construction, completing key structures such as the Secretariat, Assembly building, and High Court. However, after the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) came to power in 2019, then-Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy proposed the concept of three capitals, leading to the suspension of Amaravati’s development.
The decision triggered widespread protests from farmers who had contributed their lands for the capital. Despite their relentless five-year-long agitation, the YSRCP government turned a blind eye to their demands. With the recent change in power in 2024, the TDP-Janasena-BJP alliance has taken charge and prioritized the revival of Amaravati.
Chandrababu Naidu has roped in experts from IIT and Delhi to assess the current status of the project. Financial support from the World Bank, ADB, and ₹15,000 crore from the central government has been secured. Additionally, HUDCO has agreed to provide loans for the project.
With tenders already invited for the construction works, PM Modi’s visit is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the project. The NDA government aims to complete the capital construction within three years, ensuring the dream of Amaravati becomes a reality.
