Lok Sabha Adjourns sine Die Amid protest By Congress

Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday after four weeks of high drama and protests, which crippled the Parliament. As soon as the Lok Sabha convened for the day, the Speaker called Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to present a resolution for setting up a joint committee of Parliament to examine the bills related to ‘one nation, one election’.

The last day of the Winter Session of Parliament saw the Lok Sabha being adjourned sine dine and the Rajya Sabha till noon, moments after the Houses reconvened.

The Houses were adjourned amid a faceoff between the Centre and Opposition MPs over the scuffle on Thursday amid protests by the BJP and Congress MPs over comments on B R Ambedkar. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha adopted a resolution referring the bills on simultaneous elections to a joint parliamentary committee amid uproar.

Slogans of ‘Jai Bhim’ reverberated in the House as the Speaker read out directions barrAs the protests continued, the Speaker adjourned the House sine die. Even before the House proceedings began, Congress members started raising slogans “Jai Bheem, Jai Jai Bheem”.

Amid the slogans by the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered the Lok Sabha chamber. The Winter Session saw a standoff between the Congress and BJP with charges of ‘attempt to murder’ against the Opposition and they demand resignation of the Home Minister over remarks on BR Ambedkar.

Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that a breach of privilege motion has been moved in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.

Speaking to the media, Rijiju stated that the motion in the Lok Sabha was moved against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly spreading misinformation through a 12-second clip of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s speech. Similarly, a notice was filed in the Rajya Sabha against Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge for the same reason.

As such, in a decisive move aimed at maintaining decorum and ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Thursday issued strict instructions that no political party, Member of Parliament (MP), or groups of MPs will be allowed to hold any dharna (protest) or demonstration at the gates of Parliament House.
