Indiramma Housing Scheme: 20 Lakh Homes In Four Years, Says Ponguleti

The Telangana Congress has rolled out six key promises in its assembly election campaign, making significant strides to assist the underprivileged. Among the initiatives introduced are Mahalakshmi free bus travel, free electricity, and loan waivers for farmers. One of the most noteworthy commitments is the Indiramma Housing Scheme, designed to provide housing for low-income families. The government has pledged ₹5 lakh to support the construction of homes, leaving many families eager to know when they can start building on their own plots.

In a recent announcement, Telangana’s Housing Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, clarified the implementation of the Indiramma Housing Scheme. Initially, homes will be allocated to impoverished families who already own land but lack housing. For those without land, the second phase will involve the allocation of plots along with the financial aid for construction.

Beneficiary identification is set to commence on the 6th of this month, utilizing a newly developed app aimed at streamlining the process. The minister highlighted the ambitious goal of constructing 20 lakh homes over the next four years, adhering to central government standards of providing plots measuring between 75 to 80 square yards.

Minister Reddy emphasized that poverty will serve as the main criterion for selecting beneficiaries, with homes specifically allocated in the names of women heads of households. The selection process will be conducted by village committees, aiming to complete this within 15 days, followed by a swift finalization of the beneficiary lists. This initiative is designed to be an ongoing effort, with final selections managed by Indiramma committees in each village.

“We are committed to providing housing in the names of women, ensuring that the selection process prioritizes the underprivileged without any political interference. A specialized app has been developed to facilitate beneficiary selection, which has slightly delayed the process. The construction will be carried out in four phases, with payments structured as follows: ₹1 lakh for the foundation, ₹1.25 lakh for the walls, ₹1.5 lakh for the slab, and ₹1 lakh upon completion,” Minister Reddy explained.

He further announced that 3,500 houses would be allocated to each constituency during the first phase, allowing beneficiaries the flexibility to design their homes according to their preferences, as there will be no mandated design for Indiramma houses.
