It has been five years since the brutal murder of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan’s uncle and former MP, YS Vivekananda Reddy, at his home. This heinous act, which occurred just before the 2019 assembly elections in the State, has evolved into a major political issue over the years. Following a prolonged investigation, the CBI finally arrested several individuals in connection with the case, among them Cuddapah MP YS Avinash Reddy. Although arrested, Avinash Reddy was immediately released on bail last year. Opposition parties have alleged that Avinash Reddy was the mastermind behind the murder, criticizing Jagan for purportedly using his influence in Delhi to shield Avinash.
YS Vivekananda’s daughter, Sunitha, and Congress leader YS Sharmila openly condemned Jagan Mohan Reddy’s alleged tactics to protect Avinash. They further alleged that Jagan is intentionally shielding Avinash Reddy to safeguard his party from embarrassment, as Avinash is one of the 22 MPs. Sunitha made startling comments about Jagan’s response when she requested an inquiry into Avinash Reddy’s involvement in the murder. These incidents have fueled suspicions regarding Avinash Reddy’s role in the murder. Undoubtedly, the mystery surrounding Vivekananda Reddy’s death has brought considerable disgrace to the YSRCP and Jagan Mohan Reddy over the past five years.
In this context, YS Jagan has blatantly announced Avinash Reddy’s candidacy for the upcoming elections from the same segment. This move is unexpected, as political experts speculated that Jagan might overlook Avinash Reddy’s candidacy this time due to the ongoing uproar surrounding Viveka’s murder, both within the family and from opposition parties. At the very least, to preempt criticism from his family members, Jagan should have sidelined Avinash Reddy for the upcoming elections. However, this has not been the case.
Jagan appears to have disregarded the allegations and criticisms, opting to endorse Avinash Reddy due to the latter’s significant financial resources and influence in the area. Jagan’s sole agenda seems to be winning the elections regardless of the character and background of his candidates. This instance once again underscores Jagan’s purported protection of his nephew Avinash, who stands accused of involvement in his uncle’s murder. Opposition parties have once again denounced Jagan’s alleged brazen actions.
