SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth), assigned to the Kanniyakumari district, receives a complaint from Saranya (Dushara Vijayan), an activist government school teacher, about drug use in schools. Determined to find the culprit, he teams up with Patrick, also known as “Battery” (Fahadh Faasil), and eliminates the offender in a staged encounter. In the process, Athiyan also takes down a corrupt police officer.

As he faces inquiries regarding his actions, Human Rights Activist Judge Sathyadev (Amitabh Bachchan) consistently raises objections to such encounters on principle. The situation takes a dark turn when Saranya is brutally sexually assaulted and murdered. Athiyan is eager to investigate her death, but the Chennai police hinder his efforts. Meanwhile, government teachers and lecturers pressure authorities for a quick resolution in Saranya’s case.

When a special investigation team captures the suspect, he manages to escape, leading to Athiyan being assigned to eliminate him within a week. Athiyan completes this task in just 48 hours, only to discover from Sathyadev that the presumed harasser is innocent. This revelation prompts Athiyan to dig deeper, uncovering Natraj’s (Rana Daggubati) involvement in the case. What really happened to Saranya? Who is behind her tragic fate, and why was another person framed? Watch the movie to uncover the truth.

Review:

Rajinikanth lights up the screen with his trademark energy and charm, once again mesmerizing fans with his youthful spirit. The filmmakers have done well to showcase him in a vibrant and captivating way, preserving his signature style and swagger. While his performance is undoubtedly engaging, the character feels a bit repetitive, reminiscent of roles he’s played before. His dialogue delivery, dance moves, and action sequences are entertaining, but they lack the originality that marked his earlier performances.

Amitabh Bachchan’s impactful presence uplifts the film, with his scenes alongside Rajinikanth invoking a sense of nostalgia and pleasure. However, the script relies on conventional dialogue and predictable scenarios. Fahadh Faasil brings a lively sense of humor and energy to his role, making his performance both memorable and engaging.

Rana’s dominating presence and stern expression immediately captivate the audience. Manju Warrier impresses during a standout song sequence, while Ritika Singh convincingly portrays her role as a cop. Rao Ramesh and Kishore offer reliable support as fellow officers, and Dushara Vijayan leaves a strong impression with her emotionally intense role. Although each actor performs well within their parts, the script doesn’t provide enough depth or creativity to fully elevate their performances.

Director T.J. Gnanavel, riding the wave of “Jai Bheem’s” success, attracted significant attention with his collaboration with Rajinikanth on “Vettaiyan.” The impressive cast generated considerable excitement, but the film ultimately fails to meet expectations. Instead of crafting an engaging storyline, Gnanavel focuses on highlighting Rajinikanth’s heroism. The film leans heavily on familiar clichés, including scenes involving government schools and teachers. While the predictable emotional twist offers resolution, it lacks any sense of originality.

The lack of a villain in the first half creates a distinct void, but the predictable twist at the interval generates interest for the second half. Unfortunately, the shift toward encounter killings and human rights topics introduces logical inconsistencies in the investigation. The character development fails to reach significant peaks, and despite several emotional scenes, the predictability of the narrative undermines the potential for a true connection, ultimately reducing the film’s effectiveness.

Anirudh Ravichander’s musical score does not meet expectations, offering forgettable songs and a subpar background score that diminishes the film’s overall ambiance. While the production values are commendable, the execution ultimately lacks the polish and originality necessary to elevate the film effectively.

Ultimately, Vettaiyan, despite its expansive premise, turns out to be a conventional cop drama. While Rajinikanth’s commanding presence and the impressive cast initially captivate audiences, the film ultimately falls flat. Director T.J. Gnanavel strives to convey a powerful emotional message, but it gets overshadowed by underdeveloped characters, nonsensical plot points, and excessive glorification of the hero. A more polished script and a brisker pace in the second half could have greatly enhanced the film’s overall effectiveness.
